| Summary/Abstract |
What are the challenges to peace in 2014? The date is worth emphasizing, since attempts to broker peace in the Middle East are anything but new. In fact, the 1979 David Accords with Egypt are already 35 year old, and the Israeli-Palestinian peace process in entering its 23rd year. The process is growing stronger, but genuine peace is weakening by the day. In the meantime, there have been countless studies, articles, books, maps and reports addressing all aspects in the conflicts.

| Summary/Abstract |
The purpose of this article is to outline and analyse David Ben-Gurion's security policy and alternatives to it offered by others and their role from the run up to the Six Day War of 1967 to this day. The differences are to be sought in Ben-Gurion's emphasis on deterrence, primarily nuclear deterrence, and on the American efforts to thwart this option, which contributed to his resignation in 1963; yet BG's security policy also entailed minimal territorial expansion in the West Bank as a result of renewed Arab aggression, while his successors adopted a preventive conventional war including territorial changes in the West Bank, East Jerusalem included. The ramifications of the Six Day War for the 1973 round of hostilities and for further conventional hostilities all the way to the shadow of the Iranian bomb are discussed.

| Summary/Abstract |
This article argues that Israel experiences a unique perception of the perils of anarchy that drives it to a strategic preference for disproportionately offensive action against rivals and enemies. Actions taken pursuant to that doctrine have caused serious inconvenience to U.S. foreign policy in the Mideast for over four decades. This article argues that by reassuring Israel, both diplomatically and with arms sales, that the United States is committed to its survival, the United States has obtained significant measures of strategic restraint on Israel's part. That restraint has brought significant benefit to the United States as it seeks to guarantee regular access to the vital resources of the Middle East. This article provides examples of both successful reassurance and reassurance denied to illustrate the argument that U.S. support produces tangible strategic benefits for the United States
