India’s Labour Agreements with the Gulf Cooperation Council Countries: An Assessment / Hameed, Sameena   Journal Article
Hameed, Sameena Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Despite the Indian government's proactive initiatives and reforms in the labour laws in the host countries, the welfare of Indian workers in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries remains compromised. The Indian workers continue to face exploitation, often left stranded or forced to return home penniless. In line with best global practices, India’s Bilateral Labour Agreements (BLAs) and Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) with all the GCC countries need to make specific reference to the host countries' labour laws and facilitate bilateral coordination in the governance of the full migration cycle. Special focus is needed in the construction sector, where a vast majority of low-skilled Indian workers are employed. The article examines the effectiveness of India’s BLAs and MoUs with the GCC countries in protecting the low-skilled Indian workers in the region.

Invigorating India’s economic diplomacy in South Asia / Hameed, Sameena   Article
Hameed, Sameena Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract For the past few years, India has made constant efforts to reach out to its neighbours by funding infrastructure projects to improve connectivity between India and its others neighbours in South Asia. It has already announced zero duty access for the least developed countries in the SAARC region, and has constantly pruned its sensitive list along with doses of economic aid. The present Government has made unambiguously clear that the prime focus of India’s economic diplomacy will be India’s immediate neighbourhood. The Prime Minster invited leaders of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka to his swearing ceremony, made Bhutan and Nepal his first international travel destinations, and resolved a seven-decade long territorial dispute with Bangladesh in December 2014. At the SAARC summit in November 2014 in Nepal, India backed three pacts to enhance connectivity and energy cooperation in the region.

Political Economy of Rentierism in the Middle East and Disruptions from the Digital Space / Hameed, Sameena   Journal Article
Hameed, Sameena Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Rentierism in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region had emanated both from significant external rent and from the statist model of development feeding each other, where legitimacy was secured through rent distribution. The rent-led resource imbalance between the state and the society, as well as intra-societal inequalities in the region, has been less recognized and studied. The flow of external rent in tandem with internal rent-seeking has perpetuated the wealth and power of the political and economic elites and limited economic opportunities of the larger population. The rentierism that bred on vertical controls and network of privileges is set to be disrupted from flows and connectivity generated in the growth of digital commerce in the region.
