Birds without legs: legal integration as potentiality for women of an Afghan-Turkmen family in Istanbul / Ibañez-Tirado, Diana; Khan, Rabia Latif   Journal Article
Ibañez-Tirado, Diana Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract This article examines how three generations of women in an Afghan–Turkmen family residing in Istanbul, Turkey, have experienced historical migration and legal integration. We deploy the concept of potentiality to convey these women’s experiences of legal integration as a particular form of existence that is, at times, expressed by them and other families of Afghan background with the Dari metaphor of being ‘birds without legs’. The metaphor conveys their constant mobility. Combining original ethnographic data with the analysis of historical works, we argue that families of Turkic ethnolinguistic backgrounds from Afghanistan residing in Turkey have been unable, and at times unwilling, to realize refuge, citizenship and settlement as the endpoint of their mobile trajectories.

Muslim battalions: Soviet Central Asians in the Soviet-Afghan war / Zhou, Jiayi   Journal Article
Zhou, Jiayi Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract This article concerns the Soviet military's use of soldiers of Afghan ethnicities (Uzbek, Tajik, Turkmen, and others) during its war in Afghanistan, both as spetsnaz and more generally in the 40th army. Special Forces Detachment 154 and Special Forces Detachment 177, the first and second 'Muslim Battalions,' would play important roles not only during the palace takeover in December 1979 but also during the 1983 cease-fire in Panjshir. This article challenges earlier views that Soviet Muslims and Central Asians were unreliable soldiers who colluded with mujahedin, and points to a more balanced perspective of their role in Afghanistan.

Transformation of Turkey’s Regional Policies: The Case of the KRG Referendum Debacle / Kardaş, Şaban   Journal Article
Kardaş, Şaban Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Turkey’s response to the Kurdistan Regional Government of Iraq’s independence referendum took most observers by surprise. The prevailing assumption was that, despite its vocal objections, Turkey would eventually just accommodate the results of the referendum because years of engagement and a KRG-centred Iraq policy had created multi-faceted interdependencies, which would be hard to overturn. However, rhetoric dictated policy. In a counter-intuitive move, Turkey realigned its partnerships to chart a new policy which involved greater coordination with the central government of Iraq. This reaction is best understood through a study of contextual variables at regional, domestic and leadership levels which have led to major changes in Turkey’s regional policies.
