Multiscale interplay of higher-order moments between the carbon and energy markets during Phase III of the EU ETS / Dai, Xingyu   Journal Article
Dai, Xingyu Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract The Phase III of the European Union Emission Trading System (EU ETS) is significantly different from the previous Phases in terms of price trajectory and operational mechanism. Against this background, this study reveals the multiscale interplay of higher-order moments (skewness and kurtosis) between the carbon and energy markets, and formulates optimal portfolio strategies to manage higher-order moments risks at different time horizons. We detect a breakpoint, September 15, 2016, in the carbon-energy markets which divides Phase III into two stages corresponding to different market status. Our findings show that the bidirectional higher-order moments spillovers between the carbon and energy markets are weak at the short-run timescales (below 16 trading days), while the long-run (over 16 trading days) higher-order spillover effect is greatly enhanced. In particular, we find the spillovers in the higher-order moments are strong when the carbon and energy markets are in bullish status. Furthermore, we demonstrate that carbon assets are good short-run hedge against exposure to spillover risks in higher-order moments of the energy markets, while the hedging effectiveness declines at the long-run timescales.

Oil prices, stock markets and portfolio investment: evidence from sector analysis in Europe over the last decade / El Hedi Arouri, Mohamed; Nguyen, Duc Khuong   Journal Article
Nguyen, Duc Khuong Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2010.
Summary/Abstract This article extends the understanding of oil-stock market relationships over the last turbulent decade. Unlike previous empirical investigations, which have largely focused on broad-based market indices (national and/or regional indices), we examine short-term linkages in the aggregate as well as sector by sector levels in Europe using different econometric techniques. Our main findings suggest that the reactions of stock returns to oil price changes differ greatly depending on the activity sector. In the out-of-sample analysis we show that introducing oil asset into a diversified portfolio of stocks allows to significantly improve its risk-return characteristics.

Pan-European management of electricity portfolios: risks and opportunities of contract bundling / Gampert, Markus; Madlener, Reinhard   Journal Article
Madlener, Reinhard Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2011.
Summary/Abstract Due to the liberalization of energy markets in the European Union, today's European utilities not only focus on electricity supply, but also offer exchange-traded "structured products" or portfolio management for unbundling financial and physical risk positions. Many utilities are only able to provide these services in their domestic markets. In a globalized economy, the need for a centrally organized pan-European portfolio management has arisen, as it allows a simplified commodity sourcing in combination with an optimized risk management. In this paper, we examine the challenges to be overcome for establishing a European-wide bundling of electricity contracts. For this purpose, a case study based on the business perspective of RWE Supply & Trading in Central and Eastern Europe is carried out. In a first step, we analyze general requirements for a pan-European bundling of electricity contracts. Then, RWE's situation in Europe is examined, based on which we finally propose a concept to meet customer demands in Central and Eastern Europe.
