Summary/Abstract |
Besides equipping the infantry, a serious look also needs to be given to its
training. Use of tactical simulators for training commanders up to unit level,
support weapons and advanced infantry weapons simulators, driving and
communication simulators have to be procured and utilised to train better
educated soldiers who will be required to handle more complex weapon systems
and equipment in future. More than the shortcoming in educational standards
among the soldiers there is a lack of understanding on part of the officers for
need to train their command better and mange the time more gainfully. For this
to happen the working ethos in the Army will have to undergo a change and
senior officers will have to give a lead. Besides, a serious thought also needs to
be given to re-organisation of mountain formations to enhance their combat
capabilities which have remained unchanged for many decades. They need to
be provided with tools for better situational awareness, fire power, command
and control, manoeuvrability, better logistics and greater staying power.

Operation Golden Bird, conducted along the Indo-Myanmar border in the North-Eastern state of Mizoram under the aegis of 57 Mountain Division (57 Mtn Div) in April–May 1995, has often been portrayed as a joint operation between the armed forces of India and Myanmar. In reality, however, this operation was planned and executed by the Indian Army alone, with troops ex 57 Mtn Div and those under operational control of Headquarters Inspector General, Assam Rifles (North) or HQ IGAR(N). The Mizoram police was excluded from the operation, at least in the initial stages. That the Myanmar Army also got involved in the operation was not by design on any side.

Summary/Abstract |
Sovereignty’ and ‘history’ have a universal context in international politics. But in Beijing’s strategic foreign policy setting, the logic of ‘sovereignty’ and ‘history’ are employed or applied selectively. This is clear in the context of its reservation on India’s oil exploration in the South China Sea (SCS) and its own plans to implement the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) through Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK) which India opposes. The strategic implications of these matters are huge for India. India needs to read carefully the complexity behind both matters and need to discuss the matter prudently with China.
