0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2013.
Summary/Abstract Bangladesh was born in December 1971, after Pakistan rejected installation of the Awami League of East Pakistan, that had won the national elections held in end 1970 and then proceeded to crush democracy in East Pakistan by arresting the leaders of the Awami League and brutally suppressing its democratic movement. The Awami League and the people of East Pakistan were thus forced to resort to guerilla warfare and fight for independence. In this fight the Muslim population of East Pakistan got divided. Some Bengali Muslims who supported the fundamentalist right, sided with Pakistan in its attempt to crush the move for independence by the majority of Bengali Muslims.

Jogendranath Mandal and the Politics of Dalit Recognition in Pakistan / Asif, Ghazal   Journal Article
Asif, Ghazal Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract This essay examines some turns in the Pakistani political career of the Dalit leader Jogendranath Mandal between 1947 and 1950 when he resigned as a government minister and left the country. The imperatives of Dalit emancipation interacted with concerns about the position of minorities, thereby revealing the conditions by which difference became legible in the new state. In the creation of Pakistan, Mandal had seen a promise of furthering Dalit emancipation, but this vision could not withstand the state’s view of an undifferentiated Hindu minority population. By tracing Mandal’s trajectory, this essay follows both the promises offered by Pakistan and the slow closure of such alternative possibilities.

Population movements in West Bengal: a case study of Nadia district, 1947-1951 / Ghosh, Subhasri   Journal Article
Ghosh, Subhasri Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2014.
Summary/Abstract This article scrutinises the ramifications of population movements between India and Pakistan in and after 1947 in one particular border district in West Bengal. Information from census reports of pre-independent and independent India and Pakistan allows detailed examination of micro-level cross-border migrations, showing how the relocation of populations completely recast the religious and demographic contours of this border district. Within just four years, the Muslim-majority district of Nadia turned into an overwhelmingly Hindu-majority district through this two-way population movement. Contrary to popular perceptions, which stress the unidirectional pattern of migration on the eastern side of India, this article brings to the fore a hitherto unknown facet of partition migration.
