Summary/Abstract |
The politics of the Southern Asia region is mainly influenced by
the political developments that take place in the two neighbouring
Southern Asian countries, India and Pakistan. However, IndoPak relations have never been stable; rather, they have fluctuated
from acrimony to cooperation and vice versa. Since the partition of
the Indian subcontinent, relations between the two neighbouring
countries have been defined by a host of post-partition political
problems and crises like the border dispute, Kashmir dispute, water
dispute, etc. The emergence of the Cold War politics in the Indian
subcontinent further aggravated the acrimonious relations between
India and Pakistan. The Pakistani leaders have never reconciled the
grievances of the post-partition political problems, especially on
the Kashmir issue; thus, they consider India as the 'biggest threat'
to their existence.
1
Because of this fear psychosis, they joined hands
with the US-led Western military alliance Southeast Asia Treaty
Organisation (SEATO) and Central Treaty Organisation (CENTO),
and manoeuvred Pakistan's policy towards the Muslim countries
to develop 'power parity' with India, if not in economic terms, then
through military technology

Summary/Abstract |
The Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan remains at the core of one of the most intractable conflicts in modern history. This article provides a plausibility probe into the dynamics of this South Asian rivalry that is conceptually based on the dynamic understanding of “frozen conflicts” introduced in this special issue of Asia Europe Journal. We lay out the key features of the conflict vis-à-vis the redefined notion of frozen conflicts, situating the rivalry in the broader category of unresolved protracted conflicts with a looming threat of violence renewal. In turn, we examine the three transformational dynamics as they operate in this particular case: peaceful thawing, violent thawing, and conflict withering. We conclude that despite the ongoing developments within the conflict dynamics, the possibility of conflict transformation through any of the suggested pathways remains unlikely in the near future.

Summary/Abstract |
The primary purpose of law is to provide security. While national laws, or municipal laws as they are called, have evolved in content and sophistication to aspire to cover a wider gamut of human life such as social and economic development, international law has struggled to keep pace. Despite an explosion in laws regulating various aspects of international affairs, maintaining peace and security remains its primary and most challenging preoccupation. This paper deals with dispute settlement mechanisms and India-Pakistan disputes.

Summary/Abstract |
The article explores the sense of belonging of people from Skardu, a border town located in the Gilgit-Baltistan region, a territory administered by Pakistan but which is disputed by India for its being part of the former Princely State of Jammu and Kashmir. Neither full Pakistani citizens, nor identifying themselves with Kashmiri nationalism, the people of Gilgit-Baltistan lack of a common sense of belonging. The uncertain future of the territorial entity contributes to this, despite transformations already at work there. By examining the social and material landscape of Skardu town, and therefore using a micro-level perspective, the article aims to address issues of identity and security connected with broader constructed narratives of intrastate or interstate conflict, such as the Kashmir dispute within the wider geopolitical imaginary of India-Pakistan rivalry.
