Summary/Abstract |
A commonly held view amongst strategists is that strategy leads logistics, and that military logistics, which is the science of sustainment and replenishment, is generally subordinate. The authors of this article contend that in fact the opposite is often true, that logistics frequently has primacy over strategy, and that it is the success or failure of logistics at lower levels of war which exerts the greater effect. The authors illustrate their arguments on this nexus between logistics and strategy, with examples from the current Russo-Ukrainian conflict highlighting how Russian logistic failures have contributed to failure of the strategic plan.

Summary/Abstract |
This article argues that logistics constrains strategic opportunity while itself being heavily circumscribed by strategic and operational planning. With the academic literature all but ignoring the centrality of logistics to strategy and war, this article argues for a reappraisal of the critical role of military logistics, and posits that the study and conduct of war and strategy are incomplete at best or false at worst when they ignore this crucial component of the art of war. The article conceptualises the logistics–strategy nexus in a novel way, explores its contemporary manifestation in an age of uncertainty, and applies it to a detailed case study of UK operations in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001.

Summary/Abstract |
Advances in technology were bound to affect major transformation in all aspects of military sectors and, hence, transformation in military logistics is no exception. Ggroup Captain J. V. Singh argues that there is a need for a revolutionary change in the way we support the armed forces. This revolution is about more than providing equipment and supplies better, cheaper and faster although these initiatives are crucial for readiness and modernisation today. It is also about rethinking logistics functions and processes that will enable decisive victories well into the future. This revolution spans the depth and breadth of military logistics. includes integrating logistics functions, replacing volume with velocity, reducing demand and lightening the logistics load on the ultimate customer- the soldier.
