India’s bilateral relations with small island state of Maldives have many ups and downs in recent years. Maldives would be struggling with the adverse consequences of climate change and seeking closer ties with India to manage them. India should assist Maldives as comprehensively as possible. The region can progress if the countries of the region create interdependencies and cooperate with each other to tackle common challenges. India will need a stronger articulation of its vision South Asia. India cannot aspire to be a truly convincing great power until it achieves a better handle on its region particularly with small island state of Maldives.

India’s relations with island state of Sri Lanka and Maldives have many ups and downs in recent years. Sri Lanka’s economy is likely to grow at a faster pace but it is not clear whether the ethnic issue would be resolved. Internal tensions in Sri Lanka would put pressure on the country’s growth. India’s relationship with Sri Lanka should be multifaceted. The process of integrating Sri Lanka’s economy with that of India should be continued. Maldives would be struggling with the adverse consequences of climate change and seeking closer ties with India to manage them. India should assist Maldives as comprehensively as possible. The region can progress if the countries of the region create interdependencies and cooperate with each other to tackle common challenges.

India’s Foreign Policy with small island state of Maldives is very important from the strategic point of view in South Asia. The geographical distinction of the island-state also generates a different type of security consciousness, which is different from other states in the Asian subcontinent. Security concerns of small states of the Third World, especially islandstates, arise mainly due to external factors. Their security threats do not originate from other sovereign countries, but from non-state elements such as, transnational mercenaries and terrorists. But Maldives has its own political problems and India’s consistent objective has been the achievement In this context, India continue to be engaged with the Government and the people of small state of Maldives.

It is fact that the trend of Indo-Maldives friendly relations was in hostile position in recent years, because of extra regional powers like USA, China have also made a close relation with the island country. India’s bilateral policy with Maldives since 1965 has been many ups and downs.
