From Komsomol to the Republican Youth Union: Building a Pro-presidential Mass Youth Organisation in Post-Soviet Belarus / Silvan, Kristiina   Journal Article
Silvan, Kristiina Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Based on extensive and diverse primary material, this article provides a detailed analysis of the development of Belarusian government-affiliated youth organisations from the late 1980s until 2002. Using a historical institutionalist approach, it examines the transformation of the Belarusian Komsomol into an independent association and the emergence of new, proactive pro-government youth organisations. The article demonstrates that, contrary to common assumptions, building a mass membership pro-presidential youth organisation in Belarus was a complex project that took years to complete. When the Belarusian Republican Youth Union finally emerged in 2002, it was a result of an interplay of many structural and agency-related factors.

From youth bulge to conflict: the case of Tajikistan / Roche, Sophie   Journal Article
Roche, Sophie Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2010.
Summary/Abstract Youth' is an ambivalent concept that is situationally and emically specific. This article discusses socio-demographic approaches to youth and applies the 'youth bulge' argument - which claims that a society with a high percentage of youth has an increased risk for violent conflicts - to the Central Asian context, more precisely to the early Komsomol and the former combatants in civil war Tajikistan. Based on ethnographic material, I analyse vanguard groups and their strategies for manipulating, challenging and negotiating cultural concepts of youth to mobilize young people on a large scale.
