Critical need for reciprocity between educational migrants and communities for continuing education and socio‐cultural capital i / Langill, Jennifer C   Journal Article
Langill, Jennifer C Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Reciprocity between student success and community support has emerged as a strong theme in a phenomenological case study that was conducted amongst post‐primary educational migrant students1 in Laos. Students clearly articulated their dependence upon community support and the ways in which they gave back to their communities in exchange for their continuing education. The descriptions of their experiences were indicative of hierarchical interdependence and highlighted the effects of urbanisation on educational migrants and their lifelong learning. This study draws on Bourdieu's capital theory to understand community and reciprocity as indicators of cultural and social capital. Findings revealed that building relationships between students and their communities is essential to advancing post‐primary education in Laos.

Parents’ choice function for wards’ school continuation in rural India: a case study in West Bengal / Thakur, Debdulal; Mukherjee, Shrabani   Article
Thakur, Debdulal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract In this article, we present a choice function of a rural household relating to her/his ward’s schooling. It makes an empirical evaluation on the basis of a simple theoretical framework using a primary data set surveyed from two backward districts of West Bengal. It explores the underlying causes of wards’ discontinuation of school by examining the choice function of the parents using ordered probit analysis. The likelihood of dropout is higher at the primary level for low-income households and significantly depends on parents’ attributes, which are mostly endogenous in an educational production function, and other exogenous difficulties in accessing school. It is also triggered by a lack of expectation about the future impact of education on a child’s life.

Summary/Abstract After gaining independence, Uzbekistan created favourable conditions for development of education. Legal framework for working out a national education policy was the imperative of the day. Only on the basis of a strong cadre policy could the country look forward to development and choose its own path. Adoption of the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan was the first step in this direction that guaranteed all citizens the right to education. It provided that the State shall guarantee free secondary education to all children. Schooling is under the State control.1 Subsequent reforms were undertaken in a phased manner and these reforms have helped in improving the structure and content of education. This paper deals exclusively with the school education at a time when the country transited from decadent Soviet system to a new system of school education.
