Summary/Abstract The main attraction of military UAVs stems form the fact that their acquisition and training costs are far lower than those of combat jets. They can also be operated or stored at a fraction of the cost of manned aircraft. Neither do drones risk the life of a pilot nor are they subject to physiological limitations. They can remain airbrone for prolonged periods - loitering at great height and striking or assisting strikes with devastating accuracy when an opportunity arises. On these and other counts, they are superior to fixed wing aircraft and cruise missiles. They will surely play a key role in most future conflicts.

Let private aerospace manufacturing flourish / Noronha, Joseph   Journal Article
Noronha, Joseph Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2014.
Summary/Abstract Clearly the aerospace needs at India, civilian as well as defence, are growing. The public sector which has so tar been tasked to meet these needs has tailed to deliver. What's more, as aerospace production becomes more complex, the public sector is likely to tail even further behind in the race. Vested interests have long fostered the myth that private sector companies are less likely to uphold the national interest than the PSUS. The private aerospace industry has been kept in a stranglehold and not allowed to realise its potential. Isn't it strange that reputed firms like Tata, Birla and M&M have been given the cold shoulder because HAL is supposedly more trustworthy when it comes to cletence matters? Yet Boeing is a reliable partner in America's detence, Airbus in Europe's and Embraer in Brazil's. The government must realise that both public and private sectors are national assets; both are necessary to achieve self-reliance in the shortest possible time.

Ray of death: directed energy weapons / Noronha, Joseph   Journal Article
Noronha, Joseph Journal Article

Publication 2013.
Summary/Abstract Why do laser guns and other DEW devices seem so much more attractive than conventional projectile weapons such as guns and missiles? For one thing, DEWs can be precisely targeted. It is claimed of some airborne laser weapon systems, that while engaging a moving truck, the attacker may choose whether to simply burn the tyres and immobilise the vehicle, hit the engine and disable it or set the fuel tank alight and trigger an inferno. Similarly, while targeting a person, energy output can be controlled at will, high power to kill or low power to deliver an intensely unpleasant experience and serve as a stern warning: "Get lost, or else…!"

Strategic bomber of tomorrow: stealth spells success / Noronha, Joseph   Journal Article
Noronha, Joseph Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Today, many nations have hundreds of multi-mission, flexible fighter aircraft on their inventory. And now that aerial refuelling has become the norm for most advanced air forces, including the IAF, a multirole fighter can match the range of a strategic bomber. The other major advantage the bomber holds over the figher that of far greater weapons load, has also been reduced to some extent with the widespread availability of PGMs. Any major air force that has aerial refuelling capability and specialist PGMs can undertake strategic missions without inducting and risking prohibitively expensive bomber aircraft such as the American B-2A spirit or the Russian PAK-DA. Therefore, it seems unlikely that other nations will be tempted to acquire or produce strategic bomber aircraft.
