| Summary/Abstract |
The Comoros archipelago has had a troubled political history with territorial division at independence and, for the state of Comoros, repeated coups and a recent attempted secession. The article analyses the structural and contingent factors behind the susceptibility to conflict. It finds that the political and economic weaknesses that provoke conflict remain unaddressed and that these have been exacerbated by a failure of governance by government and civil society. Consequently, Comoros has failed to achieve viability and with it stability. The conclusion asks whether state viability in the western sense can be achieved or whether a hybrid form of governance should be supported. Currently the unresolved post-conflict issues look likely to spark further political crises and possibly violence.

| Summary/Abstract |
This article starts from the observation that whenever new concepts become popular, they are applied to more and more contexts until they have become so inclusive that they risk losing their analytical power. This tendency also shapes the relationship between the concepts of transnationality and translocality, which is discussed here with a focus on popular music. More precisely, this article draws on research on two musical actors who are both based in the French city of Marseilles and who both relate to the Indian Ocean archipelago of Comoros: the internationally acclaimed rapper Soprano and the group Afropa, who play Afrofolk on the margins of the music scene in Marseilles. Besides the different levels of success they experience and the distinct musical genres they embody, these musicians represent different generations of a Franco-Comorian ‘diaspora’. Their musical oeuvre, motivations and ambitions, as well as the perception of their music by different audiences, will be discussed with respect to the notions of transnationalism and translocality that become apparent.

Western Indian ocean islands of Seychelles, Mauritius, Madagascar, Reunion and Comoros have played significant role in migration of people and flow of goods across Indian Ocean for centuries. European powers in order to control sea lanes had firmly worked on acquiring military significance over the Western Indian Ocean region during colonial era. Revolution, Comoros, Madagascar, Seychelles and Mauritius have remain French colonies or were occupied by France for certain period of time.
