Caste and cross-region marriages in Haryana, India: experience of dalit cross-region brides in jat households / Kukreja, Reena   Journal Article
KUKREJA, REENA Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract This article, based on original research in 75 villages in the North Indian state of Haryana, examines long-distance marriages of its dominant-peasant caste men with low-caste (Dalit) women from other parts of India. The male marriage squeeze caused by the female deficit in Haryana has led to this breach in the rules of caste endogamy in matrimony. These marriages and the gender status of such Dalit brides are situated within the context of polarized caste relations, caste contestations, and caste violence against local Dalits in Haryana. Long-distance alliances, through fabricated, high-caste identities of the brides, tactically circumvent prohibitions on local inter-caste marriages and provide legitimacy to continued, local, unequal hierarchies of caste relations. Intersecting oppressions of caste, gender, and patriarchy exacerbate gender subordination within both the home and community for Dalit cross-region brides. Caste-exclusionary behaviours and discriminations are strategically employed to assert caste supremacy and subdue women's resistance. The caste stigmatization of these brides carries over to their children who face inter-generational discrimination in daily interactions and marriage prospects because of their ‘diluted’ Jat identity and low-caste status. The article provides examples of Dalit brides’ agency through resistance strategies.

Development versus democratic essence: voters' preference in assembly elections in Haryana and Bihar / Pankaj, Ashok K   Journal Article
Pankaj, Ashok K Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2009.
Summary/Abstract This article reflects on the role of voters' preference for democratic essence over development-related issues in the 2005 Haryana and Bihar Assembly elections. Based on analysis of these elections, it is argued that in a society where the distributive effects of development are less than egalitarian, economic deprivations are reinforced by socio-political inequality, but democracy still promises to be a great equaliser and source of empowerment for the masses. Democratic issues therefore appear to have greater electoral and political appeal than promises of 'development' or small morsels of favour to entice an electorate. This finding indicates an increasingly sophisticated understanding of the Indian electorate about the critical relevance of democracy.

Losing water in a fight for land: examining water access amidst land acquisition in Northwest India / Steinberg, Nik C   Journal Article
Steinberg, Nik C Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2013.
Summary/Abstract This paper presents the experiences of 22 displaced families and their battle for water access based on a pilot survey of Manesar, in the northern Indian state of Haryana. Interviews were conducted in the summer of 2011 to examine a water regime recently transformed by compulsory land acquisition and displacement in one of India's driest and fastest growing areas. This dimension of the land acquisition and displacement narrative is a response to the crisis over resource access and control in peri-urban India where a burgeoning demand for land, water, and capital has sparked contentious debates over fairness and equity. Despite recent amendments to the Land Acquisition Act of 1894, long-standing questions regarding compensation and rehabilitation for drinking water services remain unanswered. The findings of this paper show that there may be limits to halting the effects of land displacement altogether without aggressive legislation capping water grabs, or a radical shift in the way in which water is valued and redistributed to the landless. Conventional alternatives to fulfilling drinking water needs, designed by and for the less poor, such as bottled water, private water tankers, water permit systems, or even land redistribution are likely to exacerbate already limited access, rather than improve it. A number of mitigation techniques are explored, including those inherent to common property resources (CPR), which may ensure access to safe drinking water is maintained.
