America in decline? it’s a matter of choices, not fate / Lieber, Robert J   Journal Article
Lieber, Robert J Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract The notion of American decline, although now pervasive, is not entirely new. Current concerns need to be seen against a history of pessimistic assessments, as for example during the Great Depression, the post-Vietnam War era, and again in the late 1980s when fears of Japanese primacy and the rise of the European Union as a world power were widely held. Once again the United States needs to overcome serious problems, but much of the thinking and writing about the American future reflects a stubborn undervaluation of the country's resilience, fundamental strengths, and ability to overcome adversity.

American power, East Asian regionalism and emerging powers: in or against empire? / Parisot, James   Journal Article
Parisot, James Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2013.
Summary/Abstract Recent years have seen a revival of discussions on American decline. This paper intervenes in this debate by suggesting that there is a tendency towards partial conceptualisations of US power. It suggests a new historical materialist perspective that makes it possible to theorise American Empire as a relational social totality embedded within global capitalism. The paper then analyses the social limits of China's rise and the integration of East Asian regionalisation into American Empire, suggesting the extent to which world power has shifted east has tended to be overestimated. It also analyses the emergence of Brazil, India, and the brics meetings, suggesting these developments have a limited, but overstated, capacity to challenge American Empire.

Broken contract: inequality and American decline / Packer, George   Journal Article
Packer, George Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2011.
Summary/Abstract Like an odorless gas, economic inequality pervades every corner of the United States and saps the strength of its democracy. Over the past three decades, Washington has consistently favored the rich -- and the more wealth accumulates in a few hands at the top, the more influence and favor the rich acquire, making it easier for them and their political allies to cast off restraint without paying a social price.
