Afghanistan after ISAF: prospects for Afghan peace and security / Brown, Vanda Felbab   Journal Article
Brown, Vanda Felbab Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2013.
Summary/Abstract Summer 2013 brought one of the most violent fighting seasons in Afghanistan since the US military and state-building effort began in 2001. On the cusp of the momentous 2014 presidential elections and a year before the majority of international coalition forces would depart from the country in the midst of transferring security functions to the coalition-supported Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF), the Taliban is dug in and still ferocious. It is testing the Afghan security forces, which since June 2013 are supposed to be taking the lead in providing security throughout the country while international forces are increasingly disengaging from combat and departing Afghanistan.

Summary/Abstract IF STRATEGY is the art of rethinking the possible, then the time for strategic innovation against what the U.S. military terms violent extremist organizations (VEOs) is now. The American-led air war in Iraq and Syria may have shown some progress against the Islamic State and other VEOs, but the VEOs and their sympathizers have hit back with attacks in France and brutal beheadings of journalists and aid workers. Frustration is growing in Congress as the traditional tools of American power fail to produce decisive results. But what can those on Capitol Hill do?

Forging a global network in navies / Greenert, Jonathan; Foggo, James M - III   Journal Article
Greenert, Jonathan Journal Article

Publication 2014.
Summary/Abstract As the world becomes more complex and the oceans less secure, we are compelled to strengthen the bonds of international maritime cooperation. The United States of America maintains the largest maritime force in the world. The U.S. Navy is uniquely postured to operate forward and be ready to respond to any threat globally. This enables us to have naval forces present where it matters and when it matters. Throughout history, however, we have learned that it is almost always in the best interest of nations to act together when responding to crises, whether it involves deterrence or combat or providing humanitarian support. Accordingly, the U.S. Navy has rarely operated alone in a crisis. One of our advantages, as a nation and as a Navy, has been our extensive network of alliances, partnerships, and coalitions.

Illusion of geopolitics: the enduring power of the liberal order / Ikenberry, John G   Journal Article
Ikenberry, John G Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2014.
Summary/Abstract Walter Russell Mead paints a disturbing portrait of the United States' geopolitical predicament. As he sees it, an increasingly formidable coalition of illiberal powers -- China, Iran, and Russia -- is determined to undo the post-Cold War settlement and the U.S.-led global order that stands behind it. Across Eurasia, he argues, these aggrieved states are bent on building spheres of influence to threaten the foundations of U.S. leadership and the global order. So the United States must rethink its optimism, including its post-Cold War belief that rising non-Western states can be persuaded to join the West and play by its rules. For Mead, the time has come to confront the threats from these increasingly dangerous geopolitical foes.

War in Libya / Zinin, Yu   Journal Article
Zinin, Yu Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2011.
Summary/Abstract FOR OVER FOUR MONTHS now, Libya has been torn apart by violence and the civil war: the East with the center in Benghazi no longer obeys Qaddafi who still retains his grip on the west (Tripoli, capital of the Jamahiriya, and parts of Misrata, the rest of the city being held by the insurgents). For about 42 years, the colonel has ruled a vast country now split into two approximately equal parts divided by a belt of deserts and semi-deserts. Nearly the entire 6 million-strong population lives in cities aligned along the Mediterranean coast at the very brink of the desert sands.
