Living with flux in the Philippines: Negotiating collective well-being and disaster recovery / Gibson, Katherine ; Hill, Ann   Journal Article
Gibson, Katherine Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Anthropogenic climate change poses huge challenges to humanity. The frequency and magnitude of extreme weather is increasing. As more attention turns to disaster preparedness and recovery, it is worth recognising that many communities have a long history of living with the flux of planetary dynamism. They are experienced in negotiating collective well-being with one another and with the earth. Other communities have less experience and know-how and have had to adopt more experimental approaches. In this paper we draw on planetary social thought and critical disaster studies to re-think disaster recovery. We present stories of communities in the Philippines differently negotiating collective well-being in the face of climate uncertainty.

Paris: the quiet show? / Withington, Thomas   Journal Article
Withington, Thomas Journal Article

Publication 2013.
Summary/Abstract While the military mood of the Paris Air Show may have been arguably more 'low key' than in previous years, business was still being done and announcements were still being made. Certainly, budget restrictions are not helping the situation in Europe and North America. Nevertheless Asia and Latin America are fertile markets for defence equipment, and perhaps a more robust military presence will be seen at the exhibitions on the horizon in these parts of the world? For the time being in Europe at least, tight budgets make for quiet air shows.
