Changing Security Environment in Indian Ocean : Decoding the Indian Strategy / Abhinandan, Netajee   Journal Article
Abhinandan, Netajee Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract As a conflict zone for power and supremacy, history cannot exclude the oceans. During the early phases of modern history, oceans were the zones of intense contestation where most of the conflicts among major and aspiring powers played out. The contestations played the most significant role in shaping both history and civilisation. It would not be farfetched to say that the modern history of the world is also, in a way, the history of oceans. The tussles for power, resources, land, and people were mostly fought over the seas and oceans, as these were the only modes of communication and transportation linking distant countries and continents. Though the Indian Ocean, covering the expanse from East Africa to the Indian subcontinent and Australia, has always been the theatre of human interactions, it caught global attention only in 1498 when the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama arrived at Calicut (now Kozhikode) after a successful sea voyage.

Summary/Abstract As we proceed towards an Indo-centric study in international relations, Myanmar, officially known as the Republic of the Union of Myanmar has a very crucial role to play. Myanmar, which is located to the south of the northeastern states of India, is India's only land bridge to Southeast Asia. India has a long historical relationship with Myanmar including cultural, economic and diplomatic relations since Myanmar's independence in 1948. As Burma was previously a province of India so, due to cultural links, flourishing commerce, common interests in regional affairs and the presence of a significant Indian community in Burma, Indo-Burmese relations have been strong for many years.

Summary/Abstract The development of India's relations with the European Union (EU) has been a slow and graduate affair over the past five decades. India's linkages with the mainland continental Europe in the wake of its independence in 1947 were somewhat tardy in developing as the region was accorded a relatively lower priority by decision makers, in New Delhi. The only exception was Britain with whom India has deep ties for historical reasons and which New Delhi decided to continue even after independence on political and economic grounds.
