Into the future: before commencing work of BMD phase-II, DRDO should not declare the first phase completed / Sawhney, Pravin   Journal Article
Sawhney, Pravin Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract The new Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) chief Avinash Chander has recently said that phase-I of the indigenous ballistic missile defence (BMD) programme is over and the missile shield is ready for the protection of New Delhi, the capital of India. Phase I is for interception of 2,000km range enemy missiles, and phase II for killing 5,000km range missiles. This implies that the BMD technology demonstrator phase is over and the DRDO would ask for additional massive funds to deploy the actual weapon system. This spectacular news has reached China and Pakistan; Chinese scholars are comparing it with their own indigenous BMD programme and Pakistan would use this to further justify increased production of more ballistic and cruise missiles, and fissile material.

White elephant / Suman, Mrinal   Journal Article
Suman, Mrinal Journal Article

Publication 2014.
Summary/Abstract The budget presented on 10 July 2014 has been called pedestrian, lacklustre and devoid of any innovative initiative by different critics. Some have gone to the extent of describing it as a 'budget-without-tears', wherein a token allocation of Rs 100 crore has been made to each and every promise made in the party manifesto. However, one curious provision of the budget has escaped the attention of the most of the detractors. Quite unexpectedly, allocation to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has been hiked from the previous year's Rs 10,610 crore to Rs 15,283 crore, thereby raising the share of DRDO from the earlier five per cent to nearly seven per cent of the defence budget now.
