Rise and the fall of the Turkish economic success story under AKP (JDP) / Aktas, Elvan   Journal Article
Aktas, Elvan Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Turkey presents a prime example of a country where economic crises/successes develop simultaneously with political and social crises/successes. The current governing political party, Justice and Development Party (JDP) had its share of a period with progress in political and social inclusiveness and reforms, and the economic and political successes that come with it. Although it lost its ability to rule alone temporarily as a result of June 2015 elections, subsequently it regained power with unprecedented proportions in the history of the Republic of Turkey. Unfortunately - and very much similarly to its predecessors in the Turkish political history- JDP has lately been showing signs of authoritarianism and exclusiveness domestically, as well as isolationism internationally. These factors are leading to the end of its political life as they bring the era of economic growth and prosperity to an end with them. This paper is trying to establish links with political/social and economic success in the context of Turkish politics and management of the Turkish economy, as well as to observe and to document those links within the experience of JDP.

Turkey's new labour regime under the justice and development party in the first decade of the twenty-first century: authoritarian flexibilization / celik, Aziz   Article
celik, Aziz Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract During the period of the Justice and Development Party (JDP), the longest uninterrupted ruling party in the history of modern Turkey (except for a period of single-party rule during the early Republican era), not only a new political regime but also a new labour regime has been established. Following the 12 September 1980 coup d’état, and during the time of Premier Turgut Özal (1983–91), precarious and flexible labour practices started up that were convenient for the government and employers, but disadvantageous to workers. The JDP institutionalized these practices in the early years of the twenty-first century.

Turkey's transition to liberal democracy and the issue of its E / Mohapatra, Aswini K   Journal Article
Mohapatra, Aswini K Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2011.
Summary/Abstract Turkey has often been projected as a model by the US-based think tanks and Western media for enlargement of market democracies in its surrounding regions to contain the surge of radical Islam. The appropriateness of the Turkish democracy as a model is, however, contested by many from within the region and without. While the Arabs ridicule Turkey's democracy as a farce and a 'democracy of tanks', Western critics harp on its illiberal character as reflected in the titular powers and reserved domains of military, high level of human rights abuse and denial of cultural liberties to the minority Kurds. It is in the past decade, particularly since the European Union's (EU) decision in December 1999 to accept Turkey's candidacy for membership that the country has experienced radical political reforms signifying a qualitative transformation of its polity to a liberal democracy. The purpose of this article is not to assess Turkey's progression to liberal democracy or to analyse the domestic debate spurred by the reform process between the progressive Islamists and the secular establishment. Instead, it aims at examining the function of Turkey's EU accession process in facilitating the second historic transition of Turkish polity (the first being the change-over from mono-party to multi-party system in 1946).
