Air power: an evolution of the threats and challenges before the IAF / Bahadur, Manmohan   Journal Article
Bahadur, Manmohan Journal Article

Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract The Indian Air Force (IAF) is into its eighth decade and as it closes in on its centenary, a mere two decades away, many a treatise has been propounded on the challenges ahead for the youngest armed service of independent India. What started as a mere flight of Wapitis at Drigh Road, Karachi, has grown into a potent power projection arm of the state. The IAF derives its fortitude from its motto, Nabha Sparsham Deeptam (Touch the Sky with Glory). But there is perhaps a limitation in the coining of this motto as there is a hint of conclusiveness in the envelope of operation of Air Power. A more intuitive and farsighted approach may well have resulted in its coining to include space, the final frontier. But is space the final frontier? One better be careful lest a scribe writing about the IAF a few decades from now also questions this writer's perceptive ability! Limiting the horizon to a manageable timeframe makes the future 'realistically' transparent. So, considering a timespan of 20 years, when the IAF turns 100, let's evaluate how the anticipated threats and challenges are to be addressed based on the IAF doctrine.

Arms and the monies: the services have an urgent need for equipment but the allocated budget for new purchases is not sufficient / Bahadur, Manmohan   Article

Summary/Abstract When the history of Indian defence industry is written, there would be two sure contenders gunning for the title of the most controversial acquisition, viz., the 1984 purchase of the Bofors 155 mm artillery gun and the ongoing, mired in debate, Indian Air Force’s (IAF’s) Medium Multi Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) project. The former has outlived its utility as a missile in the political arena while the latter has just begun its journey as a potential one, post the decision of the government to acquire 36 Rafale fighters from France in a government to government (G2G) contract.

Coercion and air power / Bahadur, Manmohan   Journal Article

Publication 2014.
Summary/Abstract Coercion has been the subject of many a study. To coerce an adversary's thought process and actions to one's own advantage is its end game. Paradoxically, there needs to be a con?uence of interests for discord to occur.' Coercion is not necessarily of the military kind only; in fact, a host of other measures constitute many permutations of actions that can be used to coerce an adversary's decision-making calculus. The North "Vietnamese took on the American military might in their unification effort, and movements and groups like Hamas and Hezbollah periodically fight the Israelis despite the military asymmetry that exists between the two; and the indigenous Afghans, in the long run, were not overawed, first by the might of the Soviet Union and then the Americans. In fact, one study suggests that the initiation of approximately 30 percent of conflicts has been done by the weaker party? Why does this happen and where does air power fit in the equation?

Bahadur, Manmohan Article

Summary/Abstract The Medium Multi Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) saga of the IAF is representative of the procurement problems facing the Services in general. A selection that was made public three years ago, literally to the day, is still breathing fire, or maybe just smoke now, due to the inordinate delay in contract finalisation.

Summary/Abstract Uttarakhand is one of the youngest states of India, formed just 14 years ago on 9 November 2000. It is also home to some of the most sacred shrines - Yamnotri, Gangotri, Badrinath and Kedarnath. One of these four sacred dhams of the Hindus, Kedarnath, was in the news for the devastating floods that struck it and the adjoining hills last year on June 16. It took some time for the extent of the calamity to hit home. The first person on the scene was an ex-Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot, Sqn Ldr Bhupinder VrC (fondly called Bhupi in the IAF) who was flying a civil charter helicopter in the area. Bhupinder was asked by the civil administration to fly to Kedarnath and Rambara to check what was wrong as all contact had been lost with the civil administration. In the words of Bhupinder, "…I got a shock of my life as Rambara, a huge place, did not exist at all." This set in motion a flurry of activity, resulting in the mounting of perhaps the greatest heli-lift and rotary wing relief operation in the history of aviation.

Summary/Abstract On 10 March '2014,'the 104 helicopter Squadron of the Indian Air Force celebrated its Platinum Jubilee with a get together at Suratgarh where the Squadron is based. While the Platinum lubilee celebration of any ?ying outfit is an occasion to celebrate, there was a bigger reason for the commemorat' - it was also the day 60 years ago,w]_1 0 ' l" ' I first helicopter entered the in military service in India. And, just a few days later on 28 March 1954, Pandit Iawaharlal Nehru came to Palam and was flown to Tilpat range for the fire power demo of the IAF. So, like in everything connected with air power of the nation, the lAF was a trailblazer in the Rotary Wing field too.

Summary/Abstract The conflict in Syria is inexorably turning into a quagmire as more entities get dragged into the sludge. From a hands-off policy to one of humanitarian support, the West has progressed to arming rebels, while Russia has shown that it is determined not to let down its ally by continuing arms shipments to the Assad regime. Meanwhile, other actors are chipping in to add to the misery; the latest reports refer to Sudan sending arms to rebels through (and financed by) Qatar.1 As the crisis meanders into its third year, the chant of greater proactiveness from human security proponents is getting louder, reminiscent of international interventions of the past two decades in various parts of the world.

Invisible cogs: IAF force multipliers of the unglamorous kind are equally important for the smooth functioning of the armed forces / Bahadur, Manmohan   Article
Bahadur, Manmohan Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract If there is a prima donna of the armed forces in terms of the glamour quotient, it surely must be the Indian Air Force (IAF). Air power and its flying assets have a seductive appeal in terms of the effect that they bring on to a conflict zone, and the visuals that modern technology brings to all and sundry in their living rooms — possibly, it is for this reason that recruitment advertisements for the army, navy and coast guard also highlight their flying assets, sometimes more than their basic service equipment!

Israel's concepts of cumulative deterrence: will it bring peace to the region / Bahadur, Manmohan   Journal Article
Bahadur, Manmohan Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2013.
Summary/Abstract The subject of deterrence is fascinating. Why is it that there are no clearly defined yardsticks that predict the outcome of deterrent situations between adversaries? How is it that David did not get deterred to take on goliath despite his towering strength? Or, how is it that the military might of America did not deter the North Vietnamese in persevering in their efforts to unify their country? Classical deterrence theory did not deter the nineteen Al Qaeda hijackers of four American aircraft from crashing two of them into the World Trade Centre and bringing in a new term in the English lexicon- 9/11. Why do movements or groups like Hamas and Hezbollah periodically launch armed action against Israel knowing full well that their armed might is no match for the technological and military prowess of the Israelis? Why?
