| Summary/Abstract |
This study sought to investigate the impact of firm and non-firm characteristics on crime incidence in South Africa using a Probit model and 2007 data from World Bank enterprise surveys. Results show that the firm characteristics in the country that increase the likelihood of being subjected to crime is the size of the firm, ownership structure (foreign or locally owned), and market orientation. Small firms appear to be more vulnerable to criminal attack, probably because they lack resources to invest in quality security systems. The study also found that firms that are foreign owned and are involved in export experience less incidence of crime compared to others. This can be partly attributed to the fact that most of these outward-oriented or foreign-owned firms are relatively large in size and are thus able to spend more on security systems that are effective in detecting and deterring crime. There is therefore a need for government, together with the business community, to come up with affordable but effective security measures to assist small establishments, locally owned and inward-oriented firms to detect and combat crime. This would lead to greater industrial growth, investment promotion and employment creation.

| Summary/Abstract |
The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of various types of crimes on tourist inflows to South Africa using an ARDL bounds test approach. We used monthly data for the period March 2003 to April 2011 and found that crime in the form of car hijackings, sexual crimes, murder and kidnapping have a long run and short run negative impact on tourist visits to South Africa. World income and lagged tourist visits were found to have a positive effect on tourist inflows suggesting that tourism is a luxury good and the experience that visitors have about the country is important. These results call for the government and players in the tourism sector, as well as other crime prevention units in the country, to come up with strategies for dealing with crime. Beefing up security systems and personnel and ensuring police visibility in all places, particularly at these tourist attractions, should be considered. Information should be provided to tourists, warning them about dangerous or crime-prone areas that should be avoided at all costs, as ensuring the safety and comfort of visitors is not only important for encouraging more visitations but also for ensuring sustainable tourism growth, employment creation and poverty alleviation.

This study sought to examine the impact of the quality of power infrastructure on productivity in African manufacturing firms using data from the World Bank enterprise surveys. We measured power infrastructure quality using the number of hours per day without electricity and the percentage of output lost due to outages and found these indicators to be negative and significant determinants of productivity. These variables seem to be significant determinants in Uganda, Tanzania and Zambia as well as in the food and agriculture sector. To improve economic growth and encourage employment creation, governments in Africa have to come up with measures to improve the reliability of electricity infrastructure.
