Challenges of economic integration: the case of shipping in ASEAN countries / Tongzon, Jose L; Lee, Sang-Yoon   Article
Tongzon, Jose L Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has agreed to establish an ASEAN single-shipping market (ASSM) by 2015. This paper aims to assess the impediments in achieving this vision and how they can affect the pace of integration. These impediments include the differences in their national shipping capacity, national shipping policies and regulations, and in their quality of shipping-related infrastructure and institutions. Due to these differences, the economic implications are likely to vary and raise important conceptual and implementation issues. The ASEAN experience could contribute to the understanding of shipping market integration and provide some lessons for other countries.

Why "isms" are evil: theory, epistemology, and academic sects as impediments to understanding and progress / Lake, David A   Journal Article
Lake, David A Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2011.
Summary/Abstract This essay probes tensions between our professional practices and the quality of our professional output in the field of international studies. We organize ourselves into academic "sects" that engage in self-affirming research and then wage theological debates between academic religions. This occurs at both the level of theory and epistemology. Unfortunately, this academic sectarianism produces less understanding rather than more. Theoretically, we should focus on developing contingent, mid-level theories of specific phenomena. Epistemologically, we should recognize there are multiple valid and perhaps even complementary paths to understanding.
