Lion and the Eunuch: national identity and the British genius / Colls, Robert   Journal Article
Colls, Robert Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2011.
Summary/Abstract The Lion and the Eunuch challenges the failures of British politicians to adequately understand the complexities, and the subtleties, of British national identity, and goes on to define it for them. It also explains reasons for our current confusions over who we are in the world. In 1940 Orwell wrote The Lion and the Unicorn as a rallying cry for a richly identifying country that was still able to imagine itself, and re-imagine itself, as the need arose. This essay suggests that without a radical change of government policy and thought, that power will continue to decline with far reaching consequences for the peoples of these islands.

State spatiality and the governance of economic development in : the changing role of the region / Bristow, Gillian   Journal Article
Bristow, Gillian Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2013.
Summary/Abstract This paper adopts a critical regionalist perspective to bring new insights into the drivers of state spatial transformation in sub-national economic development governance in the UK. It demonstrates that multiple forms of state spatiality are emerging in the context of late capitalism which are both territorial and relational. The paper argues that these developments cannot be explained as a simple re-scaling of the geopolitical project of competitiveness. Instead they reflect an array of political forces both in and of space, which are calling into question the functionality of regional state spaces for the governance of economic development.
