| Summary/Abstract |
While there has been much discussion in international disaster management literature in recent years of the need to give affected communities much more 'ownership' of recovery and rehabilitation pro-jects and programs, there is little real understanding of what this might mean in practice. There are many calls for post-disaster recovery programs to reduce vulnerability to future risks, or to 'build back better'. Drawing from an intense study of social recovery and community rebuilding across five tsunami-affected local areas in Sri Lanka and southern India, this article affirms the need for greater community 'guidance' of disaster recovery but it argues that different forms of community engagement are required for different stages in the long process from relief to recovery. It argues that 'build back better' is possible, but only if aid and other related agencies work more closely with existing capacities for resilience within the affected communities and contribute towards their legitimacy.

| Summary/Abstract |
This article explores five of Bahram Beyzaie's urban films over the last four decades to study their critique of the process of modernization and social changes that have taken place in Iran. These include The Journey (Safar, 1972), The Crow (Kalagh, 1977), Maybe Some Other Time (Shayad Vaqti Digar, 1987), Killing Mad Dogs (Sag Koshi, 2001) and When We Are All Asleep (Vaqti Hame Khabim, 2009). It examines the impact of modernization on the architecture and landscape of the city and consequently on the local community. It then studies the increasing complexity of ascertaining the real and unreal within the city. Finally, it looks at the changing values, the fears and threats within the city and the impact these have on its inhabitants, particularly women and their movement within the city.

| Summary/Abstract |
This paper examines changes between 1992 and 2010 in Japanese junior high school history textbooks' representations of imperial Japan's colonialism and aggression in Asia, using documentary study and interviews with actors in the textbook production process. Following a trend to increase textbook material on Japan's wartime aggression in the mid-1990s, after 2000 publishers approached this topic in contrasting ways, some expanding and some reducing their coverage, with dramatically varying results in terms of market share. Publishers' decisions on content were related to their market position and to changes in local textbook adoption procedures that have increased the decision-making power of appointed boards of education at the expense of teachers. Increased market share since 2000 is associated primarily with a progressive pedagogy in tune with recent curriculum reforms. The recent spotlight on textbook adoption has exposed weaknesses in the system, such as inadequate representation of the local community and insufficient guarantee of teachers' expert input in the adoption process. With the introduction of new textbook approval criteria requiring their conformity with the patriotic emphases of the revised Fundamental Law on Education of 2006, the content of future textbooks will clearly be strongly influenced by both approval and adoption processes.

| Summary/Abstract |
In our article, we discuss development issues in a strategically important Russian territory—Khasanskii Raion (district). We focus on the implementation of infrastructure projects within the framework of establishing the International Transportation Corridor Primor'e-2, and on subjective assessments of modernization in terms of the common good. We conclude that an assessment of the rhetoric and practice of proposed projects reveals a close relationship with other experiences of post-Soviet transformation, showing that modernization itself is largely selective, nonsystemic, and controversial in its social consequences.

| Summary/Abstract |
We assessed the factors influencing local community perceptions towards lions in the Selous Game Reserve, Tanzania. Data were collected from 384 households through questionnaire surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions, and analyzed by content analysis and IBM SPSS version 20. About 86% (n=331) of respondents had negative perceptions towards lions. Education (p=0.0016, R=1.68), occupation (p=0.0021, R=−2.07), livestock numbers (p=0.0011, R=0.-0.43), livestock management (p=0.0006, R=0.373), water sources (p=0.0019, R=−0.21), and distance from the protected area (p=0.0183, R=2.11) were significant factors for community perceptions towards lions. We recommend compensation for the victims of lion attacks to reduce negative attitudes towards the species
