Summary/Abstract |
The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) aims to improve cross-border infrastructure to reduce transportation costs across a massive geographical area between China and Europe. We estimate how much trade might be created among Belt and Road (B&R) countries as a consequence of the reduction in transportation costs (both railway and maritime) and find that European Union countries, especially landlocked countries, will benefit considerably. This is also true for Eastern Europe and Central Asia and, to a lesser extent, South-East Asia. In contrast, if China were to seek to establish a free trade area within the B&R region, EU member states would benefit less, while Asia would infrastructure, is advantageous for Europe as far as trade creation is concerned.

Summary/Abstract |
In August 2017, U.S. President Donald Trump, in accordance with Article 301 of the 1974 Law on Trade, ordered an investigation into China's policy on technologies, intellectual property, and innovation transfer. In response to the PRC violations that were revealed, Washington has raised tariffs on imported Chinese goods three times since July 2018, for a total of $250 billion. It has also placed limits on Chinese investments in the United States. This article explains the logic behind President Trump's foreign economic policy, his motivation in the unfolding trade wars, and his views on a preferred world economic order.

Summary/Abstract |
The Belt & Road Initiative is China's greatest international economic ambition, aiming at stimulating economic development in a vast region covering sub regions in Asia, Europe and Africa, which accounts for 64% of world population and 30% of world GDP. The Initiative is devised to reconfigure China's external sector in order to continue its strong growth. While infrastructure development plays a central role, the Belt & Road Initiative is a comprehensive one, including also policy dialogue, unimpeded trade, financial support and people-to-people exchange. It is too early to assess the impact of this ambitious Initiative. It certainly has the potential of turning the underdeveloped “Belt & Road” region into a new vibrant economic pillar and contributing to economic policy thinking by incorporating successful experiences of emerging market economies. However, the Initiative also faces very high barriers, including lack of central coordination mechanism, potential clash of different political regimes and beliefs and financial viability of cross-border projects.
