Summary/Abstract |
The doctrine of non-alignment allowed India to remain aloof from the Cold War alliances while seeking to become a leader of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). The dominant view of scholarship on non-alignment is critical of India’s first prime minister, Jawahar Lal Nehru whose strategic adoption of the policy was converted into an ideology of anti-Americanism by his successors. Nehru has also been criticised for his pursuit of soft power without prioritising the acquisition of hard power. Since the end of the Cold War, Nehruvian ideas of non-alignment have been contested and replaced by neo-liberal perspectives.

Summary/Abstract |
The defence of political science rests on a starting proposition that practitioners of political science need to embrace relevance rather than fear. Defending the role of politics in resolving societal dilemmas is in part a responsibility of those who study it and the challenge is significant given evidence of disenchantment with the political process in many established and mew democracies. Political science needs to offer not only an understanding of politics that is theoretical, sophisticated and empirically rigorous but also an approach that is not just problem-focused but solution-seeking. Defending political science means defending politics and taking on the challenge of improving its practice.

Summary/Abstract |
The most important thing any scholarly journal can do is to publish scholarly research and writing that is both excellent and intellectually engaging. Since it hit the ground running in 2002, Perspectives on Politics has been committed to the highest standards of scholarly publication. At the same time, from its inception Perspectives has been a journal with a difference, seeking to combine scholarly excellence with relevance and readability, and to feature a wide range of formats for and perspectives on the serious study of politics. For the past ten years Perspectives has thus served as an important public sphere for political science in general and especially for the American Political Science Association.

Summary/Abstract |
Decades after the deployment of the first peacekeeping operation (PKO)—United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO)—in 1948, the United Nations (UN) cannot boast of too many successes. The continued relevance of UN PKOs has thus come under criticism. In order to determine whether UN PKOs are still relevant, it is necessary to obtain a clear understanding of the reasons/factors for their success and failure, and thereafter assess their performance. Based on the author’s personal experience of peacekeeping and prior research, this article seeks to highlight a few factors that have an overriding influence on the outcome of a PKO. The article also attempts to provide a perspective on the relevance of the PKO in context of the challenges they face regarding planning, deployment and execution of such operations.
