Summary/Abstract |
Modern Azerbaijan is a typical Middle Eastern petrostate ruled by a classical Middle Eastern despot, where political (and economic) power is concentrated and inherited within the ruling family. Azerbaijan's military compact with Turkey, signed in 2010, suggests that Baku is preparing for war to take back Nagorno-Karabakh. Due to Azerbaijan's impending economic and strategic insignificance to the West after the peak of oil production in 2010, Azerbaijan needs to become more realistic in its claim to Nagorno-Karabakh, as its ability to persuade the great powers is set to dwindle synchronously with the depletion of oil reserves from 2011 to 2019.

Summary/Abstract |
Misleading propaganda and the creation of false history were pervasive and corrosive during the Balkan wars of the 1990s. Both the Clinton administration and the news media were responsible for the disreputable situation. And unlike the discrediting of the Bush administration's distorted accounts regarding the Iraq crisis, the Balkan myths are as prevalent today as when they were first created. That situation is dangerous on two counts. First, it inhibits the formulation of intelligent, realistic, and equitable policies regarding current Balkan issues. Second, the success of such a campaign of disinformation creates the irresistible temptation for officials and policy lobbies to try the same techniques during future international crises in that region or elsewhere.

Summary/Abstract |
In its third year, the inquisition of Radovan Karadzic is supposedly nearing the halfway mark, as the prosecution is milking the dregs of its case in hopes of discovering a pearl of credibility - if not sanity - for the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia at The Hague. It's a sure bet that by 2014 the appeal will be upheld for guilt of committing various war crimes. That assumes the tribunal still has a defendant, since two Serbian presidents and one Serbian mayor, among others, have died in ICTY custody. Who knows what the surreal judicial alchemy shall produce next? Certainly not "justice."

Summary/Abstract |
The rebellions across the Middle East and North Africa provide a perspective for America about its own leaders, who have made the "politics of survival" the determining factor of what they do. The loss of faith in our traditional political institutions caused by their focus on self-aggrandizing power instead of needed change for our people gives impetus to outside forces - such as the Tea Party - much as in Tunisia and Egypt. Leaders must restore Americans' trust by a commitment to accountability and results if they are to be the ones to lead the restoration of the American Dream.

Summary/Abstract |
Libya emerged under United Nations auspices as a stillborn, failed state dependent on Western subventions. The civil war in which it is embroiled in 2011 confirms its manifold failures, now attributable to Colonel Muammar Qadaffi. The West is ill-positioned to reengage in nation-building, given its past failures.

Summary/Abstract |
Iranian influence and interference in the internal affairs of Iraq have become central US policy concerns since the election of a Shiite-majority political elite in 2005. Yet observers have rarely addressed the strategic pursuit of support from both the US and Iranian governments by the Iraqi leadership to defend against threats to its incumbency. In recent years, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has increasingly pursued engagement with Iranian representatives in an effort to counter domestic challenges and consolidate state resources. However, while the present Iraqi elite has attracted significant trade and foreign investment as well as reconstruction assistance from Tehran, it has been less successful in consolidating an Iranian-sponsored coalition to ensure victory in national elections.
