Summary/Abstract This article is the result of the Naval Review centenary fellowship award 2013, sponsored by Ultra Electronics. I chose to study junior officer development, primarily due to the prominence of recent NR articles on the topic, and the dynamic nature of training which will always be a balance between the fleet requirements and training resources. Without doubt, both navies have met significant changes and challenges in this area in recent years - and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
