Israel’s relations with Central and Eastern Europe and the Jewish-Israeli Dilemma, 2009-2021 / Mualem, Yitzhak   Journal Article
Mualem, Yitzhak Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract This article examines the role of Jewish Diaspora considerations in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s policy towards the states of Central and Eastern Europe. Israel has traditionally sought to attain both its state-centred national goals and those of the Jewish Diaspora. Under the Netanyahu governments (2009–21) a major change took place whereby the Diaspora’s existence was viewed as dependent on Israel’s continued survival and success; hence only a strong Israel can help the Diaspora. The security and wellbeing of the Jewish Diaspora thus remains a central Israeli goal, but it is to be pursued via Israel’s strengthening on the one hand, and the deepening of Jewish identity and awareness among Diaspora Jews, on the other.

Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract Arms sales are a prominent issue in Israeli foreign policy. This subject has influenced the history of the state in the international arena. Arms sales serve two main goals: economic improvement, and a means for shaping the domestic policy of the recipient state. The government of Israel has acted to improve its relations with the recipient countries in the political and strategic areas in the framework of its foreign aid to those countries. Yet it has acted to change the policy in those countries - Ethiopia, Argentina and Iran - pertaining to their indigenous Jewish communities.

State‒diaspora relations and bureaucratic politics: the Lavon and Pollard affairs / Mualem, Yitzhak   Article
Mualem, Yitzhak Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Israeli foreign policy is a complex process comprising national and Jewish dimensions, whereby the government has often to strike a delicate balance between the desire to protect Israel’s national interests and the need to consider the interests of diaspora Jews. This problem becomes particularly pronounced with regard to national security issues as the security echelons tend to interfere in pure foreign policy issues in total disregard of the Jewish dimension of this policy, and nowhere was this phenomenon more starkly demonstrated than the Lavon and Pollard affairs of the 1950s and 1980s.
