Auto parts-automotive chain in Mexico and China: co-operation potential? / Peters, Enrique Dussel   Journal Article
Peters, Enrique Dussel Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract Mexico's economic relationship with China has intensified substantially in the last decade. Based on an increasing literature on the overall and aggregate relationship, this analysis proposes a detailed examination of the auto parts-automobile chain, which is of utmost importance for both countries and will be significant for understanding the future trade relationship between them. In order to understand the industrial organization of Mexico and China, the article first gives an overview of the international trade and industrial organization patterns. After establishing the characteristics of Mexico's and China's legal framework, production, employment and trade, the analysis concludes with a group of proposals to improve binational co-operation. Both countries - China interested in increasing its export platform based on Chinese parts brands and Mexico supplying parts and components and providing decades of experiences in international networks - can benefit from these suggestions and overcome current tensions.

Chinese investment in Mexico: the contemporary context and challenges / Peters, Enrique Dussel   Journal Article
Peters, Enrique Dussel Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Public, private, and academic institutions, in Mexico and bilaterally with China, ordinarily can facilitate long-range planning, rectify information gaps, and correct misunderstandings. But a dearth of such institutions has hindered the growth of Chinese outward foreign direct investment (COFDI) in Mexico and spurred negative reactions against it, further dampening Chinese investments. Structural trade imbalances, coupled with Mexican fears about the Chinese economic challenge, poison the political atmosphere in Mexico and between Mexico and China, also impeding COFDI. Besides exploring these problems, I provide background information on the bilateral political relationship, the features of COFDI generally and details of several Chinese investment projects in Mexico, and the two countries’ trade links. I offer some proposals designed to create a better foundation for the growth of COFDI in Mexico, a priority of both countries.

New triangular relationship between the US, China, and Latin America: the case of trade in the autoparts-automobile global value chain (2000–2019) / Peters, Enrique Dussel   Journal Article
Peters, Enrique Dussel Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract During 2000–2019, the autoparts-automobile global value chain (AAGVC) underwent significant structural changes from a number of perspectives: micro, meso, or inter-firm relations, macroeconomic, and territorial shifts. This document will focus on recent trade debates on the “new triangular relationship” between the US–China and Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), and Mexico, and specifically on trade in the AAGVC during 2000–2019. In addition to the discussion on global value chains (GVCs) and its implications, the document analyses in detail qualitative and quantitative global changes in the AAGVC and specifically in US imports during 2000–2019, highlighting the performance of Mexico and China in trade, tariffs, and transportation costs. Conclusions include a set of future research topics.
