Continuity and change in the social background of Israel's mili / Barak, Oren; Tsur, Eyal   Journal Article
Barak, Oren Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract This article discusses markers of continuity and change in the social background of Israel's military elite from the establishment of the State of Israel and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in 1948 until the present. This is done by analyzing an original database that we have created, which includes details on the social background of all 213 officers who were promoted to the ranks of major general (Aluf) and lieutenant general (Rav Aluf) - the two highest ranks in the IDF - and who served in its general staff during this period. The article also discusses the interplay between the characteristics of Israel's military elite, on one hand, and Israel's process of state formation and inter-sectoral relations, on the other hand.

Segell, Glen Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract On 12 November 2019 Baha Abu al-Ata, a leader of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad in Gaza was targeted assassinated by Israel. Intelligence was the driver of the operation – information and data were the components of intelligence gathering enabling informed decision-making via defence and security analysis. There was effective co-ordination and co-operation between the civilian government, the Israel Defense Force’s Units Skylark, Moran, 504, 8200 and 9900, and the Israel Security Agency. Policy and technicalities were integrated through civil–military relations. The methodology used six sets of different types of intelligence gathering, analysis and risk assessment that were separate yet simultaneously were asking: why, who, when, where, how (what weapon), and assessing repercussions.

Israel's strategic doctrine: updating intelligence community responsibilities / Beres, Louis Rene   Article
Beres, Louis Rene Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract If, as expected, Iran's ongoing nuclearization continues unimpaired, Israel will soon need to make certain basic revisions to its core strategic doctrine. These revisions would be substantially oriented toward enhancing the Jewish State's now-indispensable nuclear deterrence posture. Although largely counter-intuitive, such enhancement would actually require Israel to “disclose,” in carefully calculated increments, certain hitherto “ambiguous” aspects of the country's nuclear forces and infrastructures. In any such unique and unprecedented effort to systematically remove the “bomb from the basement,” major responsibilities for apprising political decisionmakers will fall upon the Israel Intelligence Community (IIC), most plainly MI (Military Intelligence, orAman) and the Israel Defense Force (IDF) Planning Branch. The IIC will need to be concerned with the following strategic doctrinal revisions.
