Afghan decisions / Style, Charles; Arnold-Forster, Josh; Cavanagh, Matt; Melvin, Mungo   Journal Article

Summary/Abstract The United Kingdom has been involved in Afghanistan operations since 2001, fighting what has been explicitly described as a 'war' in that country since 2006. By any definition, this represents a major military commitment and may come to be seen as a turning point in the UK's post-Cold War defence policy. There is great political controversy over the origins of the UK's involvement in this war and the way it has been fought.

Britain's Afghanistan deployment in 2006 / Style, Charles   Journal Article
Style, Charles Journal Article

Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract This article derives from the author's experience in a senior Ministry of Defence posting from the beginning of 2006 to mid-2007, and it is therefore an insider's account based on personal observations and perceptions of the decision- and policy-making process in Whitehall at the time. Even today, after reform of these very processes, there are still pertinent lessons from the Helmand decision about structures and mindsets in Britain's strategic planning.
