Transnational Chinese sphere in Singapore: dynamics, transformations and characteristics / Hong, Liu   Journal Article
Hong, Liu Journal Article

Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract In this article, the author advocates a new understanding of the flows of people, goods, capital and ideas between Singapore and the Chinese homeland. Based upon an empirical analysis of Singaporean Chinese's linkages with China, this paper suggests that multi-layered interactions between the Chinese diaspora and the homeland have led to the formulation of an emerging transnational Chinese social sphere. The article concludes that the rigid dichotomy between state and society has prevented us from gaining a deeper understanding of the roles of trans-state forces and cross-, sub- or transnational actors in reshaping the domestic and regional transformations of Asia.
