Chasing ghosts: rumours and representations of the export of Chinese convict labour to developing countries / Hairong, Yan; Sautman, Barry   Journal Article
Sautman, Barry Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract A recent addition to the global discourse of China's interaction with developing countries has been the claim that the Chinese government exports prison labour to these countries. While no evidence is ever presented to support this claim, it has been widely circulated in international and local media, as well as on the internet. This article examines the origins of the rumour and the mechanisms of its transmission. It shows that while the rumour often originates at the grass roots in developing countries, it is promoted locally and globally by political, economic and media elites with distinct agendas that often involve building support for opposition parties, competition in obtaining contracts, or geo-strategic and ideological rivalry. We analyse the rumour's circulation in light of the larger discourse on China and developing countries, and discuss why Chinese official responses to the claim have proved to be ineffective.

Hard-copy rumours: print media and rumour in Indonesia / Herriman, Nicholas   Article
Herriman, Nicholas Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Many scholars have analysed media and communications in Indonesia by focusing on state control and resistance to it. Another approach emphasizes the press and society interacting. This paper analyses rumours spreading through East Java in October and November 1998, which held that ‘ninjas’ were targeting traditionalist Muslims, their leaders, preachers and the whole community. The author argues that these rumours developed through the interplay of the newspapers and local gossip.

Koreans in second world war Philippines: rumour and history / Jose, Lydia N Yu   Journal Article
Jose, Lydia N Yu Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract Mas malupit ang mga Koreano kaysa mga Hapon' is a rumour about Koreans in Second World War Philippines that has persisted to this day. A comparative, quantitative statement, it is roughly translated as 'The Koreans committed more atrocities than the Japanese in Second World War Philippines'. This is a half-true memory: true, there were Koreans in the Philippines; false, they could not have committed more atrocities than the Japanese because there were very few of them, as archival evidence discussed in this article proves. If only the Koreans and their role in the war were properly discussed in Philippine textbooks, this rumour would not have persisted to this day.

Reality and rumour: the grey areas of international development in Guatemala / Clouser, Rebecca   Journal Article
Clouser, Rebecca Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract In Guatemala, development projects and practitioners are frequently associated with rumours. These rumours, often related to suspicions of ulterior motives, have a high degree of potency and endurance. This paper investigates this relationship between development and rumour, focusing on some of the more prevalent rumours including robaniños (baby-stealers), religious rumours regarding the Antichrist and rumours related to vaccinations and sterilisation. As a counter to perspectives which essentialise a lack of education in the perpetuation of rumours, I explore how they become devices through which one can understand power imbalances and everyday violence(s) inherent in many development projects and processes.
