Going underground: the political economy of the 'left turn' in South America / Rosales, Antulio   Journal Article
Rosales, Antulio Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2013.
Summary/Abstract This article argues that South America's 'revolutionary' left turn can be best explained by its assertion of state property over natural resource extraction. The recent history of the leftist movements in Venezuela, Bolivia and Ecuador relates to the failures of the neoliberal reforms applied in the region decades before, hence the dismantling of core orthodox policies has been critical for them once in power. This has been possible through the expansion of state action in the economy, but mainly through the governance of hydrocarbon extraction and the control of subsoil rents. Resource extraction has been central to the political economy of Andean left-wing revolutionaries, responsible for many of their successes but also their impending challenges. This rearticulation of underground governance is linked to global transformations that give prominence to emerging economies and reinforces these countries' position in the world economy as providers of primary commodities.

History of a legend: accounting for popular histories of revolutionary nationalism in India / Maclean, Kama   Journal Article
Maclean, Kama Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract Narratives about the revolutionary movement have largely been the preserve of the popular domain in India, as Christopher Pinney has recently pointed out. India's best-known revolutionary, Bhagat Singh-who was executed by the British in 1931 for his role in the Lahore Conspiracy Case-has been celebrated more in posters, colourful bazaar histories and comic books than in academic tomes. These popular formats have established a hegemonic narrative of his life that has proved to be resistant to subsequent interventions as new materials, such as freshly-declassified intelligence reports and oral history testimonies, come to light. This paper accounts for why Bhagat Singh's life story has predominantly prevailed in the domain of the popular, with special reference to the secrecy of the revolutionary movement and the censure and censorship to which it was subjected in the 1930s.

When Garibaldi went to Azerbaijan: a study of British perceptions of the Iranian constitutional revolution, part I, 1906-07 / Andic, Savka   Journal Article
Andic, Savka Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract In the early years of the twentieth century, a wave of constitutional revolutions swept over the developing world, attracting the attention of European observers. One of these was the Iranian Constitutional Revolution of 1906-11. British perceptions of this "brave new world" in Iran were more nuanced and diverse than one would expect for this era, commonly portrayed as a time of jingoism and rampant "Orientalist" racism. This study identifies four broad perspectives which shaped British perceptions: the imperialist, Europeanist, liberal idealist and local pragmatist. Within the context of these perspectives, British perceptions were further shaped by different understandings of Iran-influenced by a specifically Iranian-flavored literary Orientalism, Aryanism and history-and by understandings of what constituted an authentic reform or revolutionary movement.
