Chinese migration to Russia as revealed by narratives in Chines / Rabogoshvili, Artem   Journal Article
Rabogoshvili, Artem Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract This article provides an analysis of the electronic resources in the Chinese cyberspace devoted to the labor migration of Chinese people to Russia. In recent years, Russia has become an important destination country for Chinese labor migration, and migrating to Russia to work has been officially promoted as a potential means of poverty alleviation in northeast China. The author contrasts this state-regulated imagination - which in his understanding is based not least on the current Sino-Russian rapprochement - with more nuanced and competing constructions that are negotiated and circulated within the more informal and semi-anonymous virtual spaces of online bulletin board systems.

Development vs. environment in Taibei / Grano, Simona Alba; Ping-Lan, Tu   Journal Article
Grano, Simona Alba Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract This article presents a case study dealing with the controversy surrounding the construction of an alternative road connecting Danshui with Taibei City. The study serves to elucidate what the key influences are that govern environmental power dynamics between different agents in Taiwan and how these multiple levels of interaction are negotiated by the various players. The authors argue that although environmental policies are, for the most part, mandated from the top, at the local level their implementation can be bypassed, altered or stalled by these various agents.

Giese, Karsten Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract The global flow of capital, goods, people, and ideas has become ever more diverse and are affecting not only China but countries all over the world. The proverbial "other" has become increasingly present, diverse and influential in China, be it in the form of representations of destination regions for Chinese sojourners and migrants or in the form of personal experiences, given the growing numbers and higher concentrations of foreigners from around the world who have chosen to settle or conduct business in Chinese cities.

How Africans pursue low-end globalization in Hong Kong and main / Mathews, Gordon; Yang, Yang   Journal Article
Yang, Yang Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract This article focuses on global migration flows with Chinese characteristics in terms of African traders sojourning in China. In their case study of low-end globalization, the authors concentrate on the lives and livelihoods of Africans engaging in trade between China and various African countries. Like their Chinese counterparts in Africa, African traders in Hong Kong and Guangzhou, are exclusively interested and engaged in expanding the global flow of goods with Chinese characteristics. Facilitating this particular flow, the authors argue, might one day be regarded as one of China's most significant contributions to the history of globalization.

Small is beautiful: lessons from Laos for the study of Chinese Overseas / Tan, Danielle   Journal Article
Tan, Danielle Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract This case study of Chinese migration to and economic engagement in Laos examines transnational networks and the agendas of particular and diverse actors within the context of post-Cold War globalization and statehood. In her study on the activities of economically motivated new Chinese migration to Laos, a country largely neglected by mainstream overseas Chinese studies, the author sets out to challenge the notion of the retreat and weakening of the state. Applying a migration studies perspective, she argues that transnational networks are not undermining state power but rather strongly impacting on the ways states are operating.

Transnational Chinese sphere in Singapore: dynamics, transformations and characteristics / Hong, Liu   Journal Article
Hong, Liu Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract In this article, the author advocates a new understanding of the flows of people, goods, capital and ideas between Singapore and the Chinese homeland. Based upon an empirical analysis of Singaporean Chinese's linkages with China, this paper suggests that multi-layered interactions between the Chinese diaspora and the homeland have led to the formulation of an emerging transnational Chinese social sphere. The article concludes that the rigid dichotomy between state and society has prevented us from gaining a deeper understanding of the roles of trans-state forces and cross-, sub- or transnational actors in reshaping the domestic and regional transformations of Asia.
