It is rare that a technology or manufacturing method can actually change the world, but 3-D printing
promises to do just that. Although the basic technologies have been around since the 1980s, the growing availability of printers and increasingly ambitious uses of the technology - along with attendant headlines about freely available 'printed' handguns - have accelerated its prominence. From an economics perspective, the impact could be seismic.
