| Summary/Abstract |
FOR MANY DECADES, Africa was and still largely is a continent "full of problems." The problems of resolving existing conflicts and preventing new ones, and eradicating poverty, disease, social inequality, and illiteracy have always been especially acute in the African agenda. By no means all of them are resolved, or resolved to completion. But recent signs from the African South bear witness to an optimistic and ambitious vision for its future. RSA as the most economically developed country in Africa, projecting itself as a regional leader, generates political impulses aimed at strengthening Africa's overall position in the world, promoting regional integration and consolidating African identity as such.

| Summary/Abstract |
Globally, the proliferation of informal settlements continues unabated, challenging us to understand life in these risk-prone urban ‘hotspots’. Although women and children are vulnerable to risks in these marginalised environments, young men are more often considered generators of risk while their own susceptibilities are disregarded. Addressing this oversight, this study, undertaken in informal areas of Cape Town, South Africa, using a range of qualitative methods, investigated the vulnerabilities of young Xhosa men. The findings reveal conflicted masculine identities, shaped by the complex environments young men encounter in navigating life on the margins. Demonstrating the tensions shaping their identities and behaviour, the nature of their vulnerabilities is shown to be constructed over time in response to the changing landscapes young men encounter. It also reveals how they develop individualised defence mechanisms and coping strategies to survive in these environments, contesting the hegemonic forms of masculinity they are more often labelled with.

| Summary/Abstract |
This article explores the production of post-apartheid Afrikaner identity in South Africa. Centred around the private sphere of the braai, the article draws on discursive psychology to investigate the participants' dilemmas and struggles over their identity as Afrikaners, South Africans, and Africans, and the ways in which these identities are being redefined. The 'backstage' talk that is usually reserved for fellow whites or Afrikaners illustrates a clear difference between public and private constructions of Afrikaner identity. While the participants rejected many stereotypes of Afrikaner identity, they simultaneously recycled key discourses underlying apartheid ideology, particularly discourses of black incompetence and whites under threat. Participants generally claimed status as 'Africans' but strongly resisted assimilation with 'Africa' or a broader African identity. The article concludes that the construction of the Afrikaner community as embattled and systematically oppressed might provide powerful support for extremism.
