Back to the future: contemporary thoughts and views on sport and terrorism from a global perspective / Galily, Yair; Tamir, Ilan   Journal Article
Galily, Yair Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Fifty years after the massacre of 11 Israeli athletes at the 1972 Summer Olympics at Munich, this tragic event still occupies a fundamental place in the bloodstained history of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. In almost all respects it was a groundbreaking event that attracted unprecedented media exposure and substantially increased global awareness of the conflict. It also shaped Israel’s policy vis-à-vis abductions of its citizens by Palestinian terrorist organisations, which culminated in sweeping refusal to negotiate with them.

Contemporary attitudes to women’s football in Israel / Tamir, Ilan   Journal Article
Tamir, Ilan Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract The development in women’s sports in general, and women’s football in particular, has attracted extensive research due to, among other things, the high popularity of football, which functioned as an exclusively male domain for many years. This article examines attitudes towards women’s football in Israel, reflected in readers’ comments to related sport news items. Analysis of the responses to all the items related to women’s football posted in 2019 on sports and news websites, reveals mechanisms of fierce resistance manifested in disparaging and degrading attitudes towards women’s football and all factors involved in this sport. Some commenters emphasised women’s anomalous presence in football by restricting women to roles in the domestic and sexual spheres, while others explained women’s presence on football pitches by obliterating the gendered nature of women’s football, even to the point of equating the women with animals and beasts. Yet others blamed women players for the discrimination they experience on the football pitches, identifying the cause as ‘feminist terror.’

Galily, Yair Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Modern terrorist attacks are usually characterized by intentionally extreme public displays of massive violence to get wide propagation, courtesy of the media. This article uses large-scale, world sporting events, from the 1972 Munich massacre to the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing to document and analyze how terror acts grew and acclimatized into a reality in which the symbiotic, massive linkage between two gigantic entities—sports and the media—allows terrorism to prosper.

Games must go on? the influence of terror attacks on hosting sp / Galily, Yair; Tamir, Ilan; Levy, Moshe   Journal Article
Galily, Yair Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract The terrorist campaign against Israel, euphemized as the 'al-Aqsa intifada', affected Israeli society in terms of perceptions of personal security, economic and political stability and aspects such as tourism and culture. The Israeli sporting scene was affected as well. From 2001 to 2004, international sports organizations adopted policies in stark contrast to one another. While some banned certain sports events from taking place in Israel, others obliged athletes to come to Israel and fined them for refusing to do so. A comparison of how these organizations chose to act in similar cases around the world reveals a striking inconsistency. An examination of the events and information provided in personal interviews indicates that sports associations fail to define terrorism and the conditions under which competitions should be banned.

She got game?! women, sport and society from an Israeli perspective / Galily, Yair; Kaufman, Haim ; Tamir, Ilan   Article
Galily, Yair Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract The struggle of women worldwide for their right to self-realization in general and their proper representation in sports in particular included the struggle of the women in the Yishuv community prior to the establishment of the State of Israel, or in the Israeli society that was formed after the country was founded. The rapid increase in women's participation in sports in Israel over the last decades illustrates the change in the status of women in sports itself and in many other social areas, but in parallel, also exposes rigid thought patterns in regard to women's and men's involvement in sports. The different physical characteristics of men and women, and society's differing expectations influence involvement in sports and the success that women achieve in sport activities. This paper will trace, conceptually and historically, the different aspects of women's sports in Israel in the past and present, while presenting the central trends of the progression and limitations of the status of female athletes in Israel.

Use of sport in the Arab–Israeli conflict / Tamir, Ilan; Schleifer, Ron   Journal Article
Schleifer, Ron Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract This article explores the use of sport in the formation of an Israeli cultural (multi-ethnic) identity and its historical and contemporary place in the Palestinian–Israeli conflict. The power of sporting events lies in the fact that the teams represent for their fans an ideology beyond the game itself. Supporting a sports team is a primary form of identity for many people. Highly salient sporting events, which are supercharged with emotion and garner eager interest, are also a venue for achieving political objectives on the local, national, and international levels.
