Competing visions of Japan’s international engagement: Japan first vs global Japan / Tsuruoka, Michito   Journal Article
Tsuruoka, Michito Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract The state and direction of Japan’s international engagement can best be understood as a competition between the ‘Japan first’ and ‘global Japan’ schools of thought. In light of the ever worsening security environment surrounding Japan, the gap between the Japan first school advocating a focus on the immediate needs of Japan’s territorial defence and the global Japan school arguing for more global engagement is widening. The competition between the two will continue to shape the direction of Japan’s foreign and security posture – and importantly, the global Japan school is far from winning, contrary to what Abe’s hyperactive diplomacy might suggest.

Great East Japan earthquake: lessons learned for Japan's defense posture / Tatsumi, Yuki   Journal Article
Tatsumi, Yuki Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract Experience in the Great East Japan Earthquake (GEJE) by the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) was unprecedented in many ways. In addition to being the largest mobilization in its history, it was the first time that the JSDF operated under the Joint Task Force (JTF); it was also the first time that the JSDF was faced with a complex disaster that included both a large-scale natural disaster and the worst nuclear accident in Japan's history. The JSDF took away a number of "lessons learned" from this experience. These "lessons learned" by and large validate the "dynamic defense force" concept in the December 2010 National Defense Program Guidelines. Whether they can capitalize on the GELE experience and move forward is up to the JSDF and MOD leadership.
