Black and white memories of war: victimization and violence in West German war films of the 1950s / Lockenour, Jay   Journal Article
Lockenour, Jay Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract Films, especially war films, played a key role in overcoming the extreme identity crisis that West German political culture suffered after 1945 due to defeat, division, and the moral consequences of National Socialism. Despite their often somber tone, war films provided a comfortable interpretation of the Second World War (1939-45), which cast Germans as helpless victims or heroic nonconformists rather than historical actors and compliant, or even eager, collaborators. War films helped to construct a specifically West German identity during the 1950s by creating the myths and memories so important to the legitimacy of the Federal Republic and the prosperity of that decade.

Israel-Lebanon conflict in war cinema: an organisational and comparative analysis / Ben Shalom, Uzi; Stern, Nehemia N   Journal Article
Ben Shalom, Uzi Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract This article focuses on the organisational aspects of combat as represented in Israeli films about the Lebanon Wars. It analyzes four prominent films that relate to Israel’s engagement in Lebanon from the 1982 war to its operations in the southern security strip. The analysis is augmented by comparison to prominent Israeli war films on the 1973 Yom-Kippur War. These films reflect a common and coherent Military Habitus that originates in the organisational principals that define ‘Israeli National Way of War.’ This analysis offers an alternative viewpoint to interpretations that view war cinema as manifestations of broader national narratives.
