Summary/Abstract |
India's relations with Latin America and the Caribbean are more recent than with any other region of the world, for geographical and historic reasons. This piece seeks to trace the early associations, leading up to the consolidation of political and diplomatic relations in the twentieth century, and the more recent phenomenon of exponential increase in commercial and economic relations in this century. The Indian official establishment has recognised the potential that region holds for business and energy security, but also realises that the relationship carries no political baggage. Recent developments on the political and economic front augur well for a strong partnership. Latin America also recognises India as an important global power and a market for its resources, as well as a partner in several business ventures. This essay traces the diplomatic and political relationship, as well as the commercial links that have been established across the region. It examines and outlines the complementarity, given the extensive Latin American resource base, Indian technology, entrepreneurial initiatives, etc., to portray a vision of an even more dynamic future relationship. This will encompass and encourage cultural links with spinoffs in tourism, film production, etc. Eventually, the growing political and economic relationship will lead to establishment of greater physical connectivity, abolishing the myth of distance.

Summary/Abstract |
Indian diplomacy has been prominent this century, leveraging an economy that has shed inhibitions and grown impressively. Latin America however remains distant, geographically and conceptually. Political relations are cordial but seldom ascend to levels of strategic empathy. Both sides have deepened exchanges with almost all other regions and international partners in greater measure than with each other.
Still, trade has grown over thirty percent annually between 2000 and 2014. Latin American resources are an ideal fit for Indian technology, industrial capacity, and markets. The deceleration, since 2015, has as much to do with the global slowdown as with the lack of a strategy and measures to consolidate an evidently complementary relationship.

Summary/Abstract |
The article outlines the relationship between India and that distant region, with which India has enjoyed a cordial relationship that has nevertheless not been as active as this emerging power has developed with any other region. This is despite the complementarity that is evident in the resource endowments of Latin America, India’s manufacturing prowess and its enormous market, mutually beneficial technological capabilities, etc. The article points out the areas of potential and urges a greater and more focussed activism on the part of the official and business establishments on both sides. The benevolent political environment, and the recent Latin American interest in India should galvanise the upward spiral of trade, investment, tourism and cultural exchanges.
