How Saudi crackdowns fail to silence online dissent / Pan, Jennifer; Siegel, Alexandra A   Journal Article
Pan, Jennifer Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Saudi Arabia has imprisoned and tortured activists, religious leaders, and journalists for voicing dissent online. This reflects a growing worldwide trend in the use of physical repression to censor online speech. In this paper, we systematically examine the consequences of imprisoning well-known Saudis for online dissent by analyzing over 300 million tweets as well as detailed Google search data from 2010 to 2017 using automated text analysis and crowd-sourced human evaluation of content. We find that repression deterred imprisoned Saudis from continuing to dissent online. However, it did not suppress dissent overall. Twitter followers of the imprisoned Saudis engaged in more online dissent, including criticizing the ruling family and calling for regime change. Repression drew public attention to arrested Saudis and their causes, and other prominent figures in Saudi Arabia were not deterred by the repression of their peers and continued to dissent online.

Naseer Aruri and the politics of hope / Moughrabi, Fouad   Journal Article
Moughrabi, Fouad Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract A comparative approach is necessary when examining the role of Palestinian scholars and activists in defense of their cause. A look at the role of Native American scholars and activists reveals some similarities. Both groups worked hard to prevent the erasure of their identity by the settler colonial invaders. Another common theme is the emphasis on a politics of hope. Professor Aruri was a man of the left which has been in retreat throughout the Arab World. A renewed critique is necessary before the left can be resurrected. This offers the only democratic hope for the region.

Whose international is it anyway? women’s peace activists as International Relations theorists / Shepherd, Laura J   Journal Article
Shepherd, Laura J Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract This essay draws on insights from feminist scholarship to complicate the image presented of International Relations theory in Justin Rosenberg’s article ‘International Relations in the Prison of Political Science’. I suggest that Rosenberg’s careful and persuasive analysis proceeds from a number of assumptions about where ‘IR theory’ resides intellectually, and in whose bodies ‘IR theory expertise’ accrues.
