India-Iran relations: a historical amity to bitter diplomacy / Raghib, Syed Mohammad   Journal Article
Raghib, Syed Mohammad Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2013.
Summary/Abstract The announcement of a will for the re-engagement with Iran on the gas pipeline project by the Indian foreign minister came close on heels with the election of Hassan Rouhani a moderate cleric as the new Iranian President on 15 June 2013. It is widely believed that India can go ahead with the reformist Iranian President Rouhani in developing stronger ties between the two countries, which can open altogether a new chapter in the Indo-Iranian relations and can sail smoothly in their mutual co-operation in serving each other in many issues especially concerning West Asia and Central Asian region. These recent developments are being viewed as a positive sign for the both countries to improve their mutual understanding in diplomatic, socio-political and economic issues.

Iran nuclear negotiations: one year on / Dalton, Richard   Journal Article
Dalton, Richard Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract This article, written by the former British Ambassador to Iran, starts with an overview from an insider's perspective of the 15 years of diplomacy leading up to the July 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) regarding Iran's Nuclear capabilities. It discusses the merits of the plan and its prospects for the future. It examines the development of international economic engagement, and in particular argues that the western powers need to do far more to deliver an economic quid pro quo for Iran's nuclear concessions: if the situation is not appreciably better soon, it will be impossible for the US and its partners to argue credibly that they are not in breach of the JCPOA. The article concludes with a discussion of Iran's economic and political prospects in the light of the nuclear deal.

Legacy of subalternity and Gramsci’s national–popular: populist discourse in the case of the Islamic Republic of Iran / Holliday, Shabnam J   Article
Holliday, Shabnam J Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Drawing on Laclau’s concept of populist discourse and Gramsci’s ‘national–popular collective will’, and using the case of Iran, this article puts forward the idea of the legacy of subalternity in the context of post-revolution governments. The concept of ‘national–popular collective will’ facilitates an understanding of how the popular subject is constructed and the meanings embedded in that process. It is argued that Islamic Republic elites articulate a populist discourse that constructs the ‘self’ (the Islamic Republic) as synonymous with ‘the people’. Embedded in this discursive construction is a legacy of subalternity that goes back to the 1979 Revolution’s populist discourse.
