Summary/Abstract A KEY TREND in the modern development of humankind is the emergence of the information society "in which information and the level of its use and availability are radically changing the economic and sociocultural conditions of human life."1 General interest in using global information infrastructure is growing. The field of application of automatized control systems based on information and communication technologies (ICT), technical assets, and technological systems is steadily widening. ICT is rapidly penetrating individuals' private and personal lives (the Internet of Things) and social networking processes ("artificial intelligence," "big data," "pattern recognition," "e-voting," "blockchain," "digital currency," "digital law," "smart contracts," etc.).

Resident evaluation and expectation of social services in Guangzhou / Mok, Ka Ho; Huang, Genghua   Journal Article
Mok, Ka Ho Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2013.
Summary/Abstract China's welfare system is a typical “residual welfare regime”, which did not manifest too many flaws in the planned economy era. However, economic reform and market-oriented transformations in recent decades have shaken the original well-balanced “residual” and “needs” pattern. The decline of the “work unit system” has led to two consequences: First, it radically transformed the social and economic structures, which gave rise to increased and diversified needs of social welfare. Second, the government is being pressed to shoulder more responsibility for social welfare provisions. This article adopts a case study approach to examine changing social welfare needs and expectations in Guangzhou, a relatively developed city in southern China. With particular focus on the major trategies adopted by the Guangzhou government in addressing people's welfare needs, this article critically examines how far the new measures have met the changing welfare expectations of citizens in mainland China.

Victims of terrorism and political violence: identity, needs, and service delivery in Northern Ireland and Great Britain / Argomaniz, Javier; Lynch, Orla   Journal Article
Argomaniz, Javier Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Terrorism and political violence exist fundamentally as communicative acts; inherently the acts themselves serve to inspire anxiety and fear. As the recipients of such a communicative act, victims of terrorism and political violence serve as the vehicle for the dissemination of these communications to both the intended and broader audiences. Their victimising experience is thus a complex interplay between a profound personal trauma and the political/communicative dimension of the attack. Given this complexity, this article addresses how victims’ needs are understood by victims of terrorism and political violence in both Northern Ireland (NI) and Great Britain (GB). Through engagement with practitioners, victims, survivors, and community activists, this article conceptualises the existing perceptions amongst these different groups regarding needs, the delivery of services to victims in NI and GB, and examines the origins of the different approaches. Results demonstrate that victims’ needs are highly context-dependent at a public level, but relate heavily to the experiences of other victims of terrorism and political violence at a private level.
