Summary/Abstract |
This article examines the history and circumstances of the formulation by Deng Xiaoping in the late 1980s-early 1990s of some recommendations on the foreign policy of China. It deals with the study in the PRC of Deng's testament as a long-term strategy of the country in the international arena. The article also analyzes how Deng's formula is interpreted in the United States. The author reviews the current debates in China on the need to continue to implement the formula of "keeping a low profile, and taking a proactive role when feasible," ("taoguang yanghui, yousuo zuowei") or reject it as obsolete.
