It was a masterstroke by the Pakistan Army 10 years ago. The cue, probably, came from the blockbuster Bollywood movie, Baazigar (gambler), where the hero believed that to gain something big, you have to lose something. By offering the ceasefire on the Line of Control (LC) on 24 November 2003, the Pakistan Army gained a windfall in return for peanuts: it sacrificed covering fire to infiltration across the LC. In return, it got a tamed Indian Army which fenced itself on the LC sending the unambiguous signal that its offensive thinking of the Nineties had been put aside. Docility became the mind-set of the Indian Army and all that is wrong with this wonderful organisation today followed.

As the sun sets in this Line of Control (LC) village of Dehri Dabsi in Balakote area of Mendhar, the deafening sound of mortar shells rattles the air. Nobody is startled for, this has become the routine here for past one month. Life is on an edge here for the people, caught between the LC fence, minefields and night-long bombings.

The 778km long Line of Control (LC) from Akhnoor to NJ 9842 does not conform to easily recognisable terrain features in most sectors. The emphasis, therefore, is to hold areas physically and dominate them to establish a de facto proprietary right on ground, sometimes with scant regard to its tactical importance.
Strategically, the biggest security challenge is 'maintaining the sanctity of the LC'. Loss of territory is just not acceptable. This imposes a huge constraint in terms of deployment as well as measures to dominate inaccessible areas, especially in winter. Any intrusion on the LC has to be evicted on priority. The other important challenge is that of 'No Hot Pursuit'. This implies that any group of terrorists fleeing back to Pakistan or POK on interception cannot be pursued across the LC.

Another eventful year is coming to an end and this time there is a lot to be cheerful about. For the defence and the paramilitary forces, the year 2013 has been fruitful in terms of their force modernisation. Even the defence industry managed to find satisfaction in some of the advances made in the long and tedious defence procurement.
On the other hand, instances of infiltration, cross border firing and border incursion from neighbouring armies cast a pall of gloom in an otherwise successful year. In addition, there were tragic and extremely challenging situations which the government and the forces faced, such as the devastating floods in Uttarakhand, INS Sindhurakshak mishap and so on. But overall, it has been an eventful year. Let's look at the major events in Indian defence in 2013.
