Force Multiplier: US-Japan Alliance Modernization and Maritime Southeast Asia / Bradford, John F   Journal Article
Bradford, John F Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Formal and informal modifications to the US-Japan Alliance have expanded the value the Alliance operational structure delivers in support of US and Japanese national and combined naval activities in Southeast Asia. This article analyzes how the Alliance now serves as an increasingly powerful force multiplier which magnifies the capabilities, efficiency, and impact of the two allies’ naval activities in Southeast Asia. Unlike previous studies on the role of the United States or Japan in the region, it focuses on the evolving functionality of the Alliance operational structure. The article systematically discusses how the evolving nature of the Alliance operational structure is enabling it to provide expanded support for Southeast Asian maritime security in five areas: basing, combined operations, partnerships and access, extra-regional coordination, and cooperative capacity-building. Those evaluations enable discussions of prospects for US and Japanese initiatives in Southeast Asia.

Ineluctable outer space for India's national security / Bohtan, Ajay   Journal Article
Bohtan, Ajay Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2013.
Summary/Abstract Outer space, or simply space, is the void that exists between celestial bodies. This frontier of outer space is fast emerging as the fourth dimension (after land, sea and air) for military applications. Space will undoubtedly be the military high ground for warfare in the future acting as a "force multiplier" for any military operation. Militarization of space involves use of space technology for exploiting weapons on the ground and in the earth's atmosphere with more accuracy. India has to defend her physical, economic and cultural identity in the prevalent geo-political milieu as it faces varied and complex security challenges. There is a clear and present danger that sooner or later space could be weaponized by various countries. India can no longer be immune to the rapidly changing international security environment, threat to India's national security from nuclear and missile capabilities in its neighbourhood and the vulnerabilities of its space assets. It is therefore imperative that India exploits the capabilities of space, concurrently at appropriate levels, to achieve the desired operational capabilities in a compressed time frame. Since the early 1990s, the Indian armed forces have benefitted from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) civilian satellites. However, as operational requirements now demand an increase in military capabilities, the armed forces certainly need dedicated military satellites. This space capability has to be optimally exploited by the three services of the Indian defence forces with synergy and harmony, which is possible only under a single appropriate command structure. It is high time that India realizes: "To remain in Race, the Indian armed forces should be in Space".

Religion or reason? exploring alternative ways to measure the quality of doctrine / Angstrom, Jan; Widen, JJ   Journal Article
Angstrom, Jan Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract In this article, we address the often ignored issue of quality standards for doctrine. In doing so, we contribute to the existing literature on military doctrine, since much of previous research has focused on outlining the effects of doctrine or the causes of particular doctrinal content, rather than how we should measure its quality. The predominant way of understanding quality of doctrine is based on the rationalist understanding of doctrine as a force multiplier. However, rationalist aims do not necessarily tell us anything about the contents of doctrine. Hence, a doctrine can be seemingly of high quality, but ultimately impede or lead armed forces astray. Rather than focusing on the utilitarian side of doctrine, we suggest that doctrine should mainly be understood as articles of faith or a belief system. And thus the quality of doctrine becomes inextricably linked to military norms and military identity. Writing doctrine thus becomes part of ritual, rather than reason.
