Myanmar in 2013: at the halfway mark / Than, Tin Maung Maung   Journal Article
Than, Tin Maung Maung Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2014.
Summary/Abstract The year 2013 in Myanmar saw parliaments disagreeing with the executive. A joint parliamentary committee to review and amend the Constitution was formed. Western sanctions were virtually withdrawn. A resurgence of communal violence, the emergence of Buddhist nationalism, and public protest over mega-projects, land rights, wage disputes, and freedom to demonstrate were worrisome developments. A nationwide ceasefire agreement remained elusive.

Myanmar's pivot toward the Shibboleth of democracy / Taylor, Robert H   Journal Article
Taylor, Robert H Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2013.
Summary/Abstract The recent reforms in Myanmar were not brought about by Western sanctions or some contingent event, but rather planned well in advance,. For there is more continuity than change in Myanmar's political system, which is dominated by the practitioners of national power-the army and the bureaucracy. Of course there are new actors, principally Aung San Suu Kyi and the party she leads, the NLD. Yet the reality remains: state security has to be maintained. Rebalancing with ASEAN, India and now the West is helpful in terms of independence vis a vis China. This is not an invitation to the West to attempt to subvert the existing order.
